Ben had his list of things he needed to do before picking Tahiri up for prom--tuxedo pick-up, corsage pick-up, haircut, a good hour to repress the fact that this was their third and probably final prom together--and had just worked himself into a nice brood when the shop began dropping pineapples on his head.

No brooding for Ben Skywalker today, thank you, though a concussion was not outside the realm of possibility right now...

Ender had thought it was a good day to update his wardrobe for the summer.

Unfortunately, Jane thought she had a sense of humor. After rolling his eyes a few times while he opened the package of shirts that had arrived that morning, he'd decided to play along and put the extra one she ordered on.

And thusly dressed, he walked into the shop with a bag full of burgers. "Ben?"

Ben glanced up, read Ender's shirt, and snorted. "Trying to tell me something, kreetle?"

Ender's expression was decidedly wry. "It's a long story," he said, "and someone's idea of a joke."

"I love long stories," Ben said, reaching for a burger.

"And I love not wasting my breath telling you about them," Ender replied, unruffled, taking a burger for himself and sitting down.

"Brat," Ben replied, striving as always to be extremely original. "Valentine send it?"

"Let's just say it arrived unexpected with my clothes order today," Ender replied, shooting him a dry look, "And she's the only one who knows I was upgrading my wardrobe."

Now that was conversational tactics to use on a living lie detector.

"Well, I certainly don't care that much about what you wear," Ben said, missing the point rather spectacularly.

"And here I thought you'd been slipping funny t-shirts into my end of the closet," Ender said, "A fatal miscalculation - it's not like you know there's colors between black and tan."

... and it wasn't like Ender cared, considering Ben's black t-shirts were just fine, really.

"There's also orange," Ben replied with a laugh, "but that's only for going EV."

"Doesn't count," Ender replied, "I'm fairly sure your dad came up with that."

"Maybe," Ben said, "but I could go off and be an original and wear lime green but that would be ugly and clash really horribly with my hair."

"Wouldn't have been remotely original in the 2160s," Ender said, biting into his burger.

Ben tossed a fry at him. "Which is why I've seen a lot of lime green in your wardrobe."

"Early 2160s," Ender amended. "Really, Skywalker?"

He grinned. "What?"

Ender shot him a Look. "I left all my lime green in my baby clothes."

Being that he wouldn't be born until roughly 2160...

"Maybe you wanted to be retreaded," Ben said.

Retro, Ben.

"'Retreaded'. I think I'm going to start a dictionary of Ben Skywalkerisms."

"That wasn't right, was it?" Ben guessed.

Ender quirked a smile. "I think you were going for 'retro'," he offered.

"Ohhh," Ben said. "Yeah, definitely what I meant."

"I think that pretty much nullifies your insult," Ender said, biting into his burger.

"Yeah," Ben said, looking slightly deflated. "You have stupid hair. Better?"

"And you're pint-size," Ender said, once he was done swallowing and had put the burger down. "I think I got the better deal."
