The Devil's Nest [sunset]

Eric was unaware of any transformations to the island inhabitants until he arrived at the Devil's Nest and was assaulted by the greatest hits of the Wiggles and was told by Tiny that the alcohol had all turned into shave ice flavorings.

"This island," Eric grumbled, sitting down at the bar with a blood-flavored shave ice. Mmm.

"I'm hungry," Maladicta informed him, not exactly cutting the most imposing figure when she looked like a child.

If Kate wanted to go out after dark, then she would and there was no stopping her. Hey, she knew the town was dangerous, she wasn't a dummy: she'd brought protection with her!

... Okay so it was a plastic bronze knife, but it seemed much more impressive to her, and she brandished it at Eric with all her 7-year-old authority once she'd made her way to the bar. "The queen demands a soda!"

She was probably not supposed to have soda, actually. But Eric didn't know that, and she did have an actual (prom) queen's tiara on her head! That clearly meant he should do as she said.

"Are you a princess?" Ramona asked softly, a little in awe of the other girl.

"Imma queen, not a princess," Kate corrected smugly, then promptly got distracted by the other girl's appearance. "Oooh I love your hair, can I touch it?"

"Snowcones?" Ramona asked as she raced into the bar, peeking up behind the bar. She was up past her bedtime, and pretty soon someone was gonna tell her to go to sleep, but they couldn't make her go yet if she had a snowcone! "You gots a snowcone. Can I have one? I want blue!

Considering all the kids and the fact that things like bedtimes existed even if they wouldn't admit it, Jaina'd closed up Caritas a little early today. It was pure curiosity that got her to swing by after that, once she'd made tiny Tino go home, wherever that was. Plus even if Eric was the right age, she sort of wanted to make sure he hadn't scared anyone into tears or anything.

Look, there were fangs, and there were children. Scaring into tears could totally happen.

"I have to admit, there's a small part of me that's disappointed you're not four," Jaina greeted him.

Eric laughed. "Wouldn't that have been terrifying," he said. "I only spoke Swedish. And I bit people."

"More like gnawing," he amended. "Very ineffective."

Jan had no bedtime, and he still wasn't quite certain where he was supposed to sleep anyhow. And then there was the whole vampire magnet quality he wouldn't figure out for another couple of years ...

He carefully pulled himself up on a barstool and pointed at one of the bottles, not quite at random. Green was a good color, and the pointing-and-looking-sad approach had fed him most of the day.

"Please?" he asked, accent heavy.

The kitchen was offering chicken fingers and mac and cheese. The DJ was spinning the greatest hits of the Wiggles, Raffi, and the Disney musical genre.

Eric wanted to die.

Karla immediately stopped jumping, but did not get down. Instead she put her hands on her hips and yelled back, "YOU CAN'T YELL AT ME!"
