Alex was in her office -- not her school office; the law office downtown -- frowning as she tapped out e-mails on her laptop. She should be thinking about her final, but she was worrying more about these Games that Katniss had mentioned. She tried doing some research online, but wasn't finding much.

Her door was open.

A coffee and a box that totally smelled like it contained two huge fresh cinnamon rolls poked themselves around the corner at Professor Cabot.

Well, technically Momoko was holding them, but shhh!

... Okay, she totally ruined the surprise by peeking her head around too, after only a few seconds. It would be totally her luck if the Professor wasn't in.

The coffee, the cinnamon rolls, and the student were all welcome surprises, and Alex smiled.

"Come in," she said. "Is there something I can help you with? I don't need bribes, but I won't turn them down either."

"Hi, Professor!" Momoko laughed and skipped merrily into the office, handing over the coffee. The cinnamon rolls were for sharing, though. "Does it count as a bribe if it's after I already got something? I wanted to say thank you and to tell you I got accepted into the police academy! I kept forgetting to tell you!"

Alex beamed. "That's wonderful news," she said. "I never doubted it for a minute. And that means this," she continued, lifting the coffee from her desk with a nod, "counts as a thank-you present, which is far more legitimate than a bribe."

"It's totally a thank you present!" Momoko agreed. "I can't believe I got in. It's going to be totally weird learning how to be a police officer and follow all the laws and investigate things. I've only ever been a hero!"

"It's not that different," Alex said -- okay, maybe that was a little white lie. "You get a lot less credit, a lot more paperwork, and a lot more flak. A lot of police officers get angry at lawyers because they say we keep them from doing their jobs. We might make it harder, but that means the convictions actually stick and don't get tossed on technicalities."

"Hmm." She nommed on her cinnamon bun, considering that.

"That's right. Even if they're guilty, they still have to get a trial and stuff. So the perfect match would be to be a lawyer and a police officer?" And a hero, of course, but that was after hours. "So that way I'd know what to do and what I'd need to make sure the criminals don't go free after I've arrested them?"

Ugh. "But that means more school. Or, actually getting into school."

Alex smiled. "That might be entirely too much school," she admitted. "I know people who've gone from one to the other, after years on one side. Ideally, the police in your department would work closely with the prosecutors who'll be trying the cases -- it means you can keep the lines of communication open. A good working relationship and mutual trust can get you pretty far."

And, okay, sometimes lawyers and cops hooked up. That was not something Momoko needed to hear about.

Momoko relaxed at that. "I don't know if I'll be one of the ones to switch sides. Law is a lot harder than investigating and solving crimes and catching criminals. Your class was fun but hard."
