The Gig, Monday [5/16]

Dani was thrilled when she realized how much the weather had changed. It was finally warm enough to use her swimming pool! Except that she wouldn't have time because there were five horses that needed to be exercised. She quickly got them saddled, then tried to figure out if she could just ride one horse while leading the others to speed things up.

The Gig was open, and rides were free today!

After meeting Emma that morning, Angelica needed something to lift her spirits. She wandered back into town and passed by the Gig. She couldn't help but notice the horses, and she stopped to lean against the fence, watching them wistfully.

Having been cooped up indoors for far too long, the horses were all ready to get outside. Unfortunately for Dani, that meant trying to get them tacked up by herself was proving to be a challenge. Bold tried to take off on his own when she tried to saddle Kally, and then Smudge and Duke teamed up to figure out how to unlatch the paddock gate.

What Dani desperately needed was an extra pair of hands. "You! Over there, by the fence," she shouted. "I could really use some help. Do you know anything about horses?"

"Um, yes?" Angelica squeaked. She hesitated for a moment, then climbed over the fence and walked over to Dani and the horses. "I, um, used to take care of one at my old school."

"Perfect. Think you could hang onto these two while I deal with the rest of them? They're all so eager to get going that they won't wait for me!" said Dani, offering Kally's and Bold's leads.

"Sure!" Angelica said, eagerness making her forget her fear for a moment. She took the leads in one hand, and raised the other to stroke Bold's neck. "Hi there," she whispered. "What's your name?"

"His name is Bold, and he's the leader around here," said Dani, struggling to get Smudge to stand still long enough to put on a bridle. "He's a pretty smart guy, so you have to be careful that he doesn't talk you for a walk instead of the other way around."

"Are they all yours?" Angelica said, giving Kally a pat as well. "They're beautiful."

"Thanks. They came with the stable when I bought it," said Dani. "I have one more in the barn, but unfortunately I don't have any saddles that fit him. Hopefully the one I ordered will arrive soon."

"Oh, you own the stable?" Angelica said. "Do you let people go riding?"

Stupid question, of course, why else would she have a stable in town?

"I do, but right now, I'd be willing to pay people to ride. The horses have a little too much pent-up energy after I had to keep them inside to protect them from the Vikings," said Dani.

"I-I know how to take care of horses," Angelica said hesitantly. "I'd love to help you take care of them."

She'd learned how to control her powers better since the fire in the stable at the Academy. Except for melting the bracelet in class last week.

"You would? I would pay you if you wanted to help out once a week," said Dani. "Just pick a day other than Sunday or Thursday, and it's yours."

"Really?" Being paid to do something she loved? "Um, I could do any day. Maybe Mondays?" She didn't have class then, at least for this part of the summer.

"Consider yourself hired," said Dani, smiling. Now she could spend her Mondays lounging by the pool. "What's your name?"

"Angelica," she said happily. "Angelica Jones. I'm a new student up at the school. My old school had a stable and I used to take care of my horse there."

"Then welcome to The Gig, Angelica. My name is Danielle Davis, but everyone calls me Dani," she said. "If you can get along with Bold, I'm sure you'll be a great addition to the staff."
