Devil's Nest, Tuesday Evening.

Two days of sunshine and careful tanning had done wonders to soothe Emma's temper, even if yesterday had been interrupted by that limpid little ginger-haired child briefly.

Tonight she'd managed to sweet-talk Tiny into making her oodles of tropical drinks - sans alcohol, sadly, but she loved the fruity flavors - to sip while checking IDs and being the prettiest bouncer/hostess on the island. Besides, she looked fantastic in her new dress, especially with her new tan and sun-kissed blonde hair. And if she abandoned her post once or twice to dance, well, telepath. She'd know if someone new arrived, or was trying to sneak in, and could terrify them promptly and properly. She didn't think Eric would mind if she had a little fun between customers.

This week, Kate didn't look like she was in a party mood. There was no pretty dress, just a well-worn short skirt with a light hoodie with the hood pulled up. No heels, just combat boots.

Oh, and there was that thing with how her whole demeanor projected a hint of determination mixed with a whole lot of weariness from poor sleep and emotional turmoil.

"Hey, Emma. Your boss here today?"

She was going to leave immediately if the answer was no.

Emma raised an eyebrow at Kate's mental and physical state, but simply gestured toward the back. "VIP lounge," she replied. "Or at least he was the last time I looked."

Kate wanted to shake her head at that raised eyebrow, immediately wanting to convey a 'not now', but then Emma didn't ask anything so she gave a slight nod, instead. "Okay, good," she said, already turning to go. But then she stopped. "Or do I need to be charged and branded if I just want to have a word with the owner?"

Emma just held out her marker expectantly so she could draw a little star on the back of Kate's hand. "You start dancing, then I'll make you pay," she teased. "For the privilege of speaking with Northman...I'll leave that up to him to decide."

"I'm not in a dancing mood," Kate said, dully, as she held out her hand. "No need to worry about that."

Jack gave Kate an inquisitive look when she came back from talking to Eric. "Anything interesting going on?"

Explaining why he was on the island could wait a moment.

If Kate was surprised to see him (she'd missed his email among all the other stuff this week so she should have been) it didn't really show. Too tired for that. "Define 'interesting'."

"What?" Jack's voice rose a bit in pitch, and he completely forgot to try to be comforting. "That's horrible. Emma's roommate died last week. Is this a season of plague?"

"See, I really did move to the island," Jack said as he plopped himself on a stool. "Though I'm a bit peeved at the island for deciding it had to be near a desert."

"You would." Jack was still of the opinion that anything over 70 degrees was too hot for civilized people. "The tan suits you, anyhow."

"So speaks a boy that spent many of his formative years in England, where the sun never shines," she teased. "But thank you, darling. I think Sookie and I will end up spending most of our time out on the beach until you decided to move the island someplace else."

Having talked to Emma, Kate made her way to the VIP area. And yes, she stopped on the non-VIP side of the velvet rope, then stood there with her hands in her hoodie pockets, looking expectant.

Eric looked up from his phone. "Kate! Looking neither old nor young. What a nice change." He waved her inside the ropes.

"Seventeen is young," Kate pointed out as she approached him, though the remark fell short of the snarky sarcasm that would've generally been expected of her. Today it was just the truth. "'Sides, I'm here about stuff from when I was old."
