Long-Term Finance [Community Center, evening]

"Good evening," Jack said, grinning at the assembled group before tugging a chest out from behind the desk. Eric rolled his eyes--Jack had absolutely refused to let him look inside or even know where he'd gotten it. "We're going t' explore the importance of easily portable income tonight."

He knelt down and opened up the lid of the trunk, revealing it to be jammed full of gold coins and jewelry. "Namely, identifying the most valuable gems. Personally, I like emeralds, rubies, and gold--" which was fairly obvious by the chest "--but I've provided a variety of other stones as well fer ye t' get used to."

His eyes glittered at them. "And I know exactly how much I've brought with me, so please avoid the temptation of letting any of this stick t' yer fingers or clothing on yer way out, savvy?"

"Strangely enough, the pirate makes a good point about gems," Eric added. "They are extremely valuable and easy to slip in your pocket if you need to move locations quickly." He strode around the room, passing out handouts. "Pair up and try to identify the gems we put in front of you."
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

After a week skipped for total exhaustion, Kate was back in class and ready to learn. By playing with shiny gems. Or by admiring shiny gems. Something like that.

Right now, she was skimming the handout while glancing around for anyone who might want to partner up.

"Spaaaarkly," said Bo, whose fingers were not especially sticky, but who definitely appreciated pretty things.
vanillajello: (My smile your idiocy.)

"I know," Kate agreed, reaching out to pick up one of the shinies. "I don't know if my urge is really to steal them because they're worth something, but just because they're pretty."

"Admittedly, they'd look prettier set in some of that gold," Bo supplied, glancing over at Jack's chest. No, the other chest. "I don't want to steal them. I just want someone to give them to me."

Ignoring the part where she could probably accomplish that by touching Jack and asking really, really nicely. Because that would pretty much be stealing. Probably. Right?
vanillajello: (Maybe I disagree.)

Kate wrinkled her nose and looked rueful. "Well, I don't have high hopes of that happening." Now that she didn't have a needlessly rich boyfriend anymore. "So I'll just settle for admiring them. Luckily I'm okay with plastic jewels too."
nookiepowered: (smiling (got you figured out))

"Or pretty rocks?" Bo held up one of the 'gems' that she was pretty sure wasn't. "I wonder if Jack would care if we stole these."

A second later, she tilted her head and laughed. "Which would be the easiest way in the world to tell which are the real ones!"
vanillajello: (Yeah sure.)

Kate snorted, amused. "It'd still be doing the task, I guess," she agreed. "If a little ridiculous. I have this feeling Eric would mock us a lot for that."
nookiepowered: (amused (sheeyeah right))

"Ooh, mockery by Eric. A fate worse than 80's hair." Tiny had a big mouth, and Bo....was repressing. A lot. By concentrating on what happened to other people last weekend.

Surreal had never seen so much wealth in her life. Her uncut Jewel - safely stashed elsewhere, thank you - was worth a lot, she knew, as was Titian's. But that was not wealth you used to trade.

These...these were basic gems, not Jewels, but still worth a lot. And they were making her sticky fingers itch.

Oh, Isabela knew that look. She knew that desire as well. "Shame they can find you so easily on this island, isn't it?"

"This isn't right," Surreal practically wailed. "In fact, the only way it could be worse is if they made me slaughter and prepare the cow, too, and I couldn't have any steak."

They were right. There. And shiny!

Excuse Isabela as she started laughing and she leaned forward towards Surreal.

"You're a greedy thing, aren't you?" she remarked, not sounding accusing in the slightest. "You're looking at it wrong, kitten. No one's saying you can't have any steak. You'd just be a fool to try and take it now."

And today she was looking at rocks. Hermione wasn't so sure about this class activity, but she supposed there was some sense to it. Even if she wasn't going to need portable inco-

All right, fine, she could see how this would come in handy.

Jack wasn't exactly an expert on gems. He knew good jewelry, but just well enough to know he really didn't know much at all.

He poked at the stones to try to see if there were any he recognized.

Kate wandered over at an opportune moment more towards the end of the session, really nothing class-related on her mind. "Hey, Eric? Ever hear of anyone being immortal without being all, you know... Things that go bump in the night?"

She should've just said 'vampire'.

"You mean like the Fae?" he replied after a moment. "They are immortal if you don't squirt them with lemon juice."

Yeah, because that was badass.

"Or silver," he added.
vanillajello: (Uh okay I'm not sure.)

Re: Talk with Jack and Eric!

[personal profile] vanillajello 2011-05-26 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"... Lemon juice?"

Yeah, trust Kate to be distracted by that. She hadn't even gotten to the '...Fae?' part.

Eric nodded. "I don't want to know how the first person figured out that particular weakness."
vanillajello: (Yeah right.)

"God forbid anything supernatural ever make sense," Kate muttered, rolling her eyes. And then she quirked an eyebrow again. "... Wait, Fae?"

Yes. That was inevitable.

"Fairy," Eric said, nodding. "Mmm. Delicious."

Thank you, Eric.

Kate... was just going to make a pretty epic weirded out face at that, and be thankful Mitchell was a different sort. "Ew," she told him. "I didn't need to know that. But seriously, there are fairies?"
texted3times: (looking at you)

Re: Talk with Jack and Eric!

[personal profile] texted3times 2011-05-26 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Eric nodded. "They aren't seen very often--they prefer to live in their own dimension where they don't have to deal with irritating humans--" and vampires who think of them like catnip, "--but I've known a few over the years."
