With Eric nowhere to be found, Jack was forced to take the class into his own (fairly filthy) hands. "Good evening, me hearties!" he said. "Today, we begin what I believe t' be the most important part of long term investment strategy--the making of a proper treasure map. What, I ask, is the use of making all of this money if ye can't find it again after burying it ten paces past a palm tree that then falls down in a hurricane? Ye need a proper back-up system, says I."

No, he had not thought of using a bank.

He handed out maps of the island. "Here's a good starting place," he said, "though the Isle of Ikea seems t' be sticking around as well. I wouldn't recommend burying anything over in yonder town. Find five places you think seem like good places t' hide things and I'll tell you if you're right."

Chances were, he already had something tucked away in most of the likely locations. "Next week, we'll go on a treasure hunt!"

Surreal

Find a place to hide your treasure! Yes, Jack assumed that you all have a steamer trunk of something hiding under your bed.

Bo's treasure, consisting mostly of faked-up papers and real cash, lived in a very safe cash box behind some duct tape rolls and a sign reading Beware of the Leopard, but she was still amused enough to get into the idea and start spreading out the island map.

Who knew? Maybe she'd discover a floating ship full of coins or something, and need someplace to stash the loot. Anything could happen around here.

Really, Kate probably should have congratulated herself on how it was about a week and a half since That Weekend and she was yet to have to deal with anyone she'd run into then, apart from Bod. This was about the best she could've hoped for, because hiding wouldn't work forever.

That didn't mean she hadn't kind of wanted to take off as soon as she'd seen Bo here. Still, it was probably best to just face up to the possible awkwardness and/or mocking right away.

She scooted closer, tried to act normal. "Has Professor Sparrow seriously not heard of banks?"

"Can you picture 'Professor' Sparrow trusting his money to anything that involves somebody else taking care of it?" Bo shot back with a grin and a snort.

"Well, I can just barely picture him getting enough money to warrant an account," Kate mused, wrinkling her nose. "I've been to his classes at the school. He has to be getting by on luck in his piracy."

"He teaches high school?" Oh, Bo. Look who's talking.

"Summer workshops," Kate shrugged. "About singing like a pirate, and how being marooned isn't really so bad. 'Case you haven't figured it out yet, this is not your regular high school, not even when it comes to classes."

"Oh, I figured that out, yeah. Right around the time the principal was asking if I wanted a job as the security officer." So... right. Look who's talking.

Cue eyebrow raise. "... You're the security officer now?"

It wasn't meant to be an insult, honest! Just surprised.

"Apparently the fact that I can include 'lives nearby' and 'experience wrestling temporary vampires' on my resume makes up for the fact that I don't have a resume." So about that acting normal thing... "Speaking of which... how are you doing?"

Awkward, possibly, but Bo didn't have mocking on her mind, just concern.

Kate rolled her eyes, perhaps to say 'fine, really'. "Out of the last... eleven or so days," she said, attempting wryness, "I've been here on the island for about two and a half."

So, you know. Hiding was the new thing.

"Ooh, running away as the ultimate problem-solving technique. I approve." The sad thing was that she really wasn't mocking, or if she was, it was mostly self-directed. "If it helps, I don't think anyone pressed any charges. I definitely didn't."

"Yeah, 'it wasn't me, it was the island' is a regular old Fandom get out of jail free card," Kate sighed. "The guy whose nose I broke is probably gonna demand I do his laundry for a month, or something, though."

She knew Nathan far too well.

"I'm glad a broken nose is the worst thing that happened." Bo leaned an elbow on the map near her not-a-house, accidentally obliterating the spot that used to be Stuff For Sale. "That is the worst thing that happened, right?"

"Oh, that's totally the worst," Kate drawled, pushing some hair away from her eyes. "You know, except for that one chick who I scared shitless enough that she almost shot me, and those two guys I actually bit."

Bo winced. "Okay, so 'worst' is relative. I assume the guy I found you with is okay; he made it away on his own. What about the other one?"

"Well I didn't drain him or anything. Even if he was too dumb to live." Seriously. Sorry, Topher. Not that Kate knew it was him. "I had to point it out to him that he might want to get his wound checked out. And I was a vampire."

"Right, note to self: dorms-check when those weekends go down, for students too stupid to get themselves to the clinic." Or too injured, but Bo would leave that possibility unmentioned.

And Kate was going to be silently grateful for that courtesy because yes.

"Definitely not a bad idea," she agreed. "When people get transformed they might not even know where the clinic is."

"Also a good point. Or what a clinic is, if they turn into... a Viking, or something."

"Speaking of which," Kate started, leaning back in her chair and glancing towards the front of the room and who wasn't there, "our resident Viking tried to school me in making people like biting. I suppose I should be glad he didn't get too creepy."

Aaaaand Bo's opinion on creepy might not be the best one to ask either. "It wasn't exactly... bad? The, um. One time it happened to me."

Kate... visibly shuddered. "Ew. Please spare me the details."

Girl had trauma.

"Oh, it wasn't Eric. It was--"

Um.

"I'll spare you the details. Still, isn't liking it better than... not?" Not that Bo had devoted any time to pondering the question of going out with a happy bang for personal reasons. Well, no more than a decade or so.

Kate looked uncomfortable. Which was still better than the brief look of worry she'd had on her face after Bo had left that one sentence unfinished, before she'd stomped on that feeling because she Could Not Deal with anything Mitchell related at the moment.

"Yeah well, I'm not convinced you're entirely normal, so I'm not sure you get a say."

Of course she couldn't remember as little about that encounter as Bo did about being from Indiana. Of course not. Cautiously, Bo answered, "And by not entirely normal, you mean..."

"Don't play dumb," Kate said, rolling her eyes. "I mean the whole glowy blue eyes, energy sucking, mental mindfuck thing."

That bit of eloquence was served up with a mildly flaily gesture in Bo's general direction. But at least she had the presence of mind to lower her voice a bit.

"That's...picturesque." And accurate. "Don't suppose I could convince you that you hallucinated it because that guy you were feeding off was clearly stoned?"

It was worth a shot, right? Wouldn't be the first time she'd convinced someone of that. Sort of. Without the bloodsucking.

"No," Kate snorted. "It takes a lot for me to believe anyone is normal anymore. It's impossible when I've already seen it."

Bo sighed and nodded. "Fair enough." One more to add to a list that had grown longer in the last month than the ten years before it. "Normal is something I saw in my rear-view mirror a long damn time ago."

"Well, you'll fit right in here," Kate replied with a little shrug of her shoulder. "We don't really do normal. And hey, your lack of normal probably saved my ass from further trauma so... Yay, and thanks."

Bo smiled and shrugged, dancing away from the awkward too, just not as fast as Kate tended to. "Just retroactively doing my job, ma'am."

Of course, Surreal kept a good purse vanished, and had a few bank accounts scattered around at home, now. A few Sadi had started for her, when lecturing about putting all your knives in one bag or something, and a few he didn't know about.

Surreal wasn't stupid.

But she looked at the maps for likely bolt holes. A few abandoned shops, the warehouse district...there were a few spots she could hide candles, matches, non-perishable food, the necessities in case she was caught-out Craftless. Nothing of value, and nothing that could be tied to her, but she was good at finding nooks to hide things in.

He might even let you get a word in edgewise!
