The Devil's Nest, Tuesday

Emma was in about as good as mood as she could be, all things considered. Finding out that your ex-boyfriend had been in town and not even bothered to call and apologize for being an ass? It was rather possible that her mood was actually not good at all. Point of fact, Tiny was practically hiding behind the bar from her. When she was in one of these moods.

Emma was at her station, alternately texting with people and playing poker on her phone. The Devil's Nest was open, but cover was double for guys tonight. Because she could.

Get your ID inspected, check your coat, and have a lovely hand-stamp if you're under 21. Fun!

Tiny still refused to serve Emma, or let her pour her own drink, despite Atlantis having no drinking age. Anyone else under 21 was going to meet the same immovable attitude, no matter how scary ~~Emma was~~ they were.

Get your groove on or slide into a seat and watch the dancers. Devil's Nest is the perfect place to cater to your musical desires.

You aren't getting past the velvet rope unless you're invited by the owner.

I keep getting the varnish errors or the Russian post a comment screen. This is very annoying.

"Why does Tiny look like he expects you to bite his head off?" Jack asked as he obediently held his hand out for stamping. "Hello and all of that."

"There is no drinking age here, and he won't let me near the alcohol," Emma said tranquilly, reaching for her stamper. "And he keeps making a sign against the Evil Eye at me when he thinks I'm not looking."

In all fairness to poor Tiny, she had given him a thoroughly scalding scolding for not at least texting her a warning. Emma had been...busy this weekend - with Jack, point of fact - which was why she hadn't sensed Peter nor known he'd been here until she'd caught up on her radio podcasts. But as far as Emma was concerned, none of that was relevant. She was simply miffed about the lack of drinks.

Jack rolled his eyes extravagantly, making his opinion of that perfectly clear. "If it would help, I could tell him I've been making the evil eye at you for two years now and you haven't gone away yet," he said, and dodged Emma before she could swat him.

It had been too good a weekend for him to have listened to the podcasts. If he had, he would have said it sounded about right, for Peter.

"Should I pull my amazing 'I was born in in 1881' act on him, or just leave it?"

Seemed Tiny was the only person here who really seemed to fear Emma's wrath. At least, for now. Effy easily wandered up to put her hand up in front of the other girl.

"Today an anti-men day?"

This was probably the first time ever that she hadn't even tried to talk her way out of an 'x', but given her recent stability, she was starting to think her dry spell was a good thing.

"You could try, but since he's seen me talking to you, he might not buy it," she warned. Still, Jack was in far too good a mood for some of it not to wear off on Emma, and she gave him a half-smile. "And even if he does fall for it, you would have to beware Eric."

"Today is a 'Tiny is an idiot' day," Emma clarified, giving Effy a star instead of a boring 'x'. "I haven't seen you here in ages."

Effy flexed her fingers with a little smirk at the art she'd gained on her hand.

"It didn't fit on my schedule." Because apparently her doctor's solution to psychosis was to try and replace it with some sort of OCD, and giving her calendars to plan out every minute of her day.

She shrugged. "But I figured, if I'm going to fuck it up by leaving soon, what'll it hurt doing it a couple days early?"

"You can't plan out every single moment. Believe me, I've tried," Emma replied, amused. "I swear, telepathy has made me into even more of a details person than I was before my powers manifested."

"I could try Tiny, but I don't need a vampire upset at me," Jack said, with a deep sigh. "It's another dry night for me, alas. This place is lucky it hires such attractive staff or I wouldn't come in."

"We're lucky to have such a devoted customer," Emma demurred, looking at him from under her lashes. "May I get you a soda, Mr. Priest? My treat."

Flirting always made her feel better.

"You may, and I'd even pay you for it," Jack said, smiling just a bit that the flattery was having the desired effect. "I like that strawberry one."

He took a few steps toward the bar, glancing to see if Emma was keeping pace with him. "I'd ask if you had plans for the break week, but that doesn't mean much to us now, does it?"

"Not really," Emma agreed, locking the cash box and taking it with her. If someone came in, she'd know, and she could track them down and make them pay. "I could look for another TA job, but I might just pick up another shift here, or somewhere else in town."

"I just realized I'll need an entirely new wardrobe when I go back." Emma brushed her fingers over the short hem of her skirt and made a face. "I'm about eleven years fashion-forward right now, and I'd stick out horribly."

"Too much of everyone else's neuroses leaking in?" Effy guessed, not really able to think of any other good reason to pick up something like that.

"I couldn't control it at first," Emma replied, shaking her head. "Everything became about control because it was what I needed most. I knew things, I heard things, and I couldn't control what was going on around me, or fix the problems, but I could exercise control over myself and my more mundane surroundings."

"Paying excruciating attention to every single little detail of a project helped me learn focus. Eventually, that focus allowed me to bring my gifts under control so that I didn't fry my brain from everything I was experiencing. Focus gave control, control gave more focus...and now it's a habit that I am disinclined to break."

"You'll fit back in soon enough," Jack said,with no real enthusiasm for the project. Some tiny piece of his hindbrain was not at all pleased they'd go their separate ways again at the end of summer.

He firmly told that bit of hindbrain to shut up and gave Emma a smile, just in case she'd been listening in.

"It seems like the hotel and the bookstore are always hiring," he offered. "Probably pay at least as well as this, too. I was thinking about asking at the bookstore myself."

Of course she was listening, she was Emma, but she wasn't going to say anything.

Right now, anyway.

"And then I'd spend all my money on books," she sighed, shaking her head woefully. "Oh hells, I'm going to need to go through my things and either lock-up or sell any books or movies post-2001. Can you imagine the chaos if someone accidentally spotted a Barry Plodder book on my shelves that hadn't actually been published yet?"

Effy twitched a little smile. "Sounds familiar." So maybe there was something to Foster's methods, making her map out her time, list medications and follow rules. Seemed to be working for both of them.

"So. Plans for the rest of the summer?"

She shrugged slightly. "Spend quality time here, maybe look for another job," she said. "Figure out what I'm taking with me when I leave, since there's some time-travel involved."

No smartphone, unless she hid it really really well. Woe.

"You?"

"Bother the ever loving shit out of Tony the way only a little sister can," she answered, grinning.

Yeah, he was the one person back in Bristol she couldn't wait to see.

"Scads of spotty boys at your dorm room door wanting to know what happens at Pigmarts," Jack said, shaking his head and trying to hide his smirk. "Though that might happen if it gets out that you read Barry Plodder to start with. Best to limit yourself to classics and fashion magazines."

Emma couldn't help the slightly wistful smile at that idea. "That's what little sisters are for," she agreed. "Otherwise our dear older brothers would get bored."

"Oh, don't be wicked," she scolded, giving his shoulder a light shove as she claimed a seat at the bar and telepathically commanded Tiny to bring them some sodas. He wasn't worth interrupting her conversation with Jack. "I dare you to find a girl my age who doesn't read Barry Plodder. It's a cultural landmark."

"But they're still silly books," Jack protested lightly, and took he glass from Tiny before changing the subject. "... you know, you're going to have to watch what you say, too, or else you'll end up mentioning sequels to films that aren't out yet. I think it's easier to go the way I did, past to future, than the other way around."

"Well, not all of us come from worlds where magic is real, so we don't have comparisons for 'silly,'" she pointed out. "I'm just hoping my future turns out at least a bit similar, because I can win some good money running betting pools for sporting events."

"Actually the sorcery is the least silly thing in those," Jack explained. "They do it properly, with training and wands. It's the giants and elves and fairy tale bits that get up my nose."

"Properly, he says, as if we don't have trolls and gremlins and other fairy tale bits running around," Emma teased. "I got stolen by a Goblin King, remember?"

It was easier to joke about it now, safely removed from everything, even if Emma still had nightmares about it at night.

"That doesn't count," Jack said airily. "Nothing that happens on the island counts -- if it did, I'd be the odd one."

He clearly wasn't, therefore, goblins were ridiculous. Logic!

"Who says you aren't odd?" she countered impishly. "They've been fibbing to you."

Jack laughed. "Sometimes I feel like the last sane person," he confessed. "Which no doubt means I must be mad too."

"Completely mad," she agreed brightly. "But at least you aren't boring, so that's something."

"And if I can convince Emma Frost I'm not secretly boring underneath it all, I can convince anyone of anything," Jack said, looking at her through his lashes.

"Well, you are quite tricksy," she admitted, abandoning her own stool to slide into his lap. "It's that angelic look of yours. Such a sweet boy can't possibly be up to no good."

Jack laughed and wrapped his arms around her waist for balance. "We're talking about the angelic boy who has a lapful of girl right now? I can't quite think I'd pass for a choirboy at the moment."

"I suppose I could move if you want me to," she offered, giving him wide, sorrowful eyes. "I would hate to ruin your reputation."

"But half the fun of looking like this is being able to confuse people," Jack said. "If you move, you'll spoil that."

"So now I'm part of your nefarious schemes?" Emma asked, pressing a hand to her heart. "Why Mr. Priest, I'm shocked."

Please, Emma. It wasn't half as shocking as how high your hemline had inched up when you shifted into his lap.

"You are not, but I love you for claiming it," Jack said indulgently. "Really, I think the only person either of us is going to shock tonight is Tiny, if he's delicate."

Tiny just rolled his eyes and brought over a bowl of cherries to keep Emma entertained. It was possible he was hoping to be shocked.

"Tiny doesn't care, so long as he doesn't end up doing my job tonight," Emma shared, leaning in to give Jack a peck on the cheek. "Really, it's no fun being the bouncer when there's no one coming in to bounce."
