Cafe Luke's, Wednesday

Lion-o knew things had to change with the new ownership of the diner, but he still caught off-guard to see the new walk-in fridge. For today, he'd stick with cooking with ingredients he regularly used, but he was looking forward to seeing just how far back that fridge went.

Momoko thought she was going to Luke's Diner to see Lion-o.

It took her a few minutes of blank staring at the exterior before she finally poked her head into Cafe Luke's. "Uh, excuse me, does... Ah! Lion-o! You are here! I was totally worried I had somehow ended up at the wrong Fandom... I haven't right? This totally used to be a diner, like, a week ago?"

"It was, but now it's a café," said Lion-o, still looking a little confused. "I guess the new owner is making some changes. Are you hungry? I made some really good cupcakes and I've been waiting for someone to order one."

Like he had to ask?

"CUPCAKES!!!" She squealed and rushed to a nearby seat. "As in more than one, please! You made them? And there's a new owner?"

"Why stop at just one?" asked Lion-o, grinning. "Yeah, there's a new owner since Miss Lacey went home. And new owners usually like to make some changes. You haven't seen half of it yet. Now, do you want a burger before getting to the cupcakes?"

Momoko's smile dimmed only slightly at the suggestion of the burger. Not because it was a hamburger, but because it reminded her again of Jaime and his 'something healthy' prompts.

She shook her head, clearing her thoughts. "Do you make the burgers, too? If so, I totally will!"

"Not just any burger. It's a cheeseburger with bacon and avocado," said Lion-o, grinning. "Each of those ingredients are fine by themselves but become infinitely better when combined. Besides, smart chefs don't put meat in cupcakes so you have to get it in something else."

He was certain Mr. Stark and Mr. Anders would be pleased that Lion-o had remembered the most important lesson from their class.

"Meat in cupcakes?!" Blasphemy!

"I know, right? But I took a workshop last session where they showed us all these evil cupcakes that were made with things like tuna and pork," said Lion-o, cringing. It wasn't pleasant to think about the tuna cupcakes.

Oh! "Is that the Cupcake War one?" Momoko clapped her hands. "I asked if I could be a T.A!"

"Is that what they teach? How to make meat cupcakes?!"

"No, it's more like how to avoid really awful cupcakes. You do get to make them, but you can pick to make good ones," said Lion-o, tilting his head slightly. "You know, you would make a great T.A. for that course. You have pretty good taste in baked goods."

"I have awesome taste in baked goods!" She stuck her tongue out at him. "I've never been a T.A. before, but I totally couldn't not try. Especially now that I know it's more than just a class on cupcakes."

"You did get to eat some, though, right?" She was kind of looking forward to that part.

"How can you go to a class about cupcakes and not eat any?" asked Lion-o with a smirk. "Of course there was eating. You just had to be careful to pick from the good tray and not the one with the fishy cupcakes."

"So no one even tried the bad ones?" Momoko frowned at that. "I don't know. I mean, I totally think it's a bad idea to put meat in a cupcake, but what if it... tasted good and we missed out on it?"

Although she'd totally never try a celery one. Ew.

"You're definitely free to try the 'bad' ones if you'd like," said Lion-o, using finger-quotes. "I'll admit that there are some personal preferences, but I prefer my cupcakes without meat or seafood."

She shrugged. "I don't know. They sound totally disgusting, but I don't like the thought of missing out on an awesome cupcake just because of the name. I mean, I eat desserts made with red bean paste, and some people would think that sounds totally weird."

"Red bean paste? I've never heard of that before," said Lion-o, looking puzzled. "What kind of beans do they use?"

He was thinking of kidney beans or lima beans and thinking that they would still taste pretty bland in paste form.

"Azuki beans!" Momoko beamed, eager to explain. "You boil and mash them into a mushy paste and then add sugar or honey and it's totally delicious!"

"Sugar does make everything better," admitted Lion-o. "I may have to investigate this further. Where do you get azuki beans?"

"..." Momoko started to respond, then frowned. "Uhm. I don't know. I mean, at home you can totally just buy them in the store? But I don't know if T&C has any. You can check? Or I can get some sent from home! Then we can make some together!"

"I'll keep my eyes open for them. Maybe I'll ask Mr. Shunsui. I did take his creative writing workshop last session," said Lion-o. "Oh, speaking of home, Snarf said that they'll be harvesting the candyfruit soon. I might bring some back and see if I can bake with it."

Ways to Make Momoko Very Happy:

#12: Mention candyfruit.

"REALLY?! That's awesome! Are you going to go help? I can totally help too! How is Mr Snarf?"

"Snarf's doing just fine. I might go help if I don't have to miss any classes or anything important," said Lion-o. Despite being such a hard worker at the ~~diner~~ café, he seemed allergic to work when he returned home. "And you're always welcome to go back with me, though I doubt Snarf would like seeing a guest having to work in the candyfruit orchards."

"Once he sees how many I'll eat, he'll totally put me to work! I bet I eat more than even you do!" she laughed. "Plus I totally like helping when I visit people! It's always nice to be able to lend a hand to friends!"

"Then I'll let you know when I hear from Snarf about the harvest," Lion-o promised. "The more we harvest, the more I can bring back for baking!"

YAY!

"That's what you think! Like I'm going to share what I bring back?" She totally would. "I'm going to have an all night candyfruit party all myself and just eat and eat!"

Her eyes widened as a thought occurred to her. "Hey! Did you ever try them on ice cream?"

"I never thought of that," said Lion-o. "But maybe you you cooked them in sugar to make a syrup, it might go very nicely on ice cream. I'll have to tell Snarf that idea! He loves his ice cream sundaes."

"Too bad we don't have any now. We could totally take them over to the Chilly Boulder and see if they can make us something, and then tell Mr Snarf!"

She was totally pouting over the lack of candyfruit on hand and not by the thought of no Jaime-sundaes in her future.

"So are you staying on the island for the second summer session, then?"

"Yes, definitely," said Lion-o. "It's not like they really need me for anything at home, and there are so many interesting workshops being offered this session. Plus I need to make a good impression on my new boss."

"That's true. I was totally jealous when I looked at the summer workshops for this next session." It totally sucked to graduate. In more ways than one. "Some of the workshops looked totally awesome!"

"Have you met the new owner yet?"

For his part, Lion-o wasn't sure if he was looking forward to graduation next year. It was hard to believe he was going into his last year at Fandom High.

"No, I haven't met him yet. I believe he works on Mondays," said Lion-o. "But I'm looking forward to it. I'd like to know what he's got stored in the walk-in cooler. It's so big that I couldn't see all the way to the back."

Momoko's eyes grew big. "That sounds awesome! You're not just saying that, right. I mean you really couldn't see the back? Like 'come on, it's adventure time' couldn't see it?"

"Like I would need to leave a trail of bread crumbs to find my way back. That kind of big," said Lion-o. "It looked like it was packed full of food, too. I wanted to explore it a bit more, but I didn't have enough time before the lunch crowd started showing up."

"You totally need to tell me all about it when you do! I mean, it's Fandom! Maybe it leads to a totally different world!"

"There's a totally different world at the end of the causeway, too," Lion-o pointed out. "We're never short of adventures around here. But yeah, when I find what's at the end of the walk-in cooler, I'll tell you all about it."

Momoko gave him a look of complete and utter disbelief. "But this one would be inside a restaurant!" Totally different, Lion-o.

"Would that be any different than the totally different world inside locker 327? They had nice music," said Lion-o wistfully.

"Oooh! Maybe it is another entrance to that world! That would be so funny! That you would go into the fridge and come out the locker!"

While he's busy peeking into the walk-in fridge.

It's probably a good thing I've been catching up on Eureka from the beginning!
