Emma was rather envious of the Rock Band party she could 'hear' up at the dorms, and was going to spend her shift coaxing the DJ to play her favorite songs so she could hum along.

The Devil's Nest was open, but beware the sheer amount of rock 'n roll.

Jack was more cheerful than usual as he loped in. "Did radio lie, or did you take a job at the sex shop?"

Look, as Emma's lover he was within his rights to be amused by that. Mildly terrified, but amused.

"Karla decided to offer me a job at Dite's, and I accepted," Emma replied, raising an eyebrow at him. "It's hardly some tawdry 'sex shop.'"

"And yet you knew what I meant," Jack said. "Don't fuss. I wasn't judging -- I just thought it an interesting temporary career choice."

"I'm bored," she admitted, giving him a woeful look. "Not when I'm here, obviously, but I'm not a TA this semester and the extra income can't hurt."

"Oh, when you give me those sad Emma eyes it makes it hard for me to tease you," Jack sighed. "I know what you mean. I've taken up bartending for horses for some of the same reasons, after all."

"Well, they aren't normally horses," Emma pointed out, reaching for her phone to bring up the incrimination photos of Karla from the other day. "Doesn't Karla make an adorable little unicorn?"

Jack laughed. "How did you get yourself hired without petting her and trying to feed her apples?" he wanted to know. "Or -- is that how you got yourself hired?"

Apparently sad Emma eyes only worked as an anti-teasing measure for so long.

"I didn't know most of the horses who stopped by the bar, but Mitchell was purple. Got miffed at me for calling him pretty."

"I ordered delivery of pony-friendly salads and such, since I didn't want to listen to her stomach rumble at me the entire time I was there," Emma replied. "When she objected to me sitting in her usual spot, claiming it's for employees only, I informed her I was an honorary employee for getting dinner."

"Somehow, out of all that, I got hired."

"You fed her," Jack nodded. "See, I wasn't so far off about the apples."

"It's Karla," Emma pointed out. "Even if she hadn't been a pony, food is usually the key to her heart."

Sorry, Karla.

"But I didn't feed her with the intent to get an employee discount."

"I know," Jack reassured her.

He let a moment pass, then: "... was there anything you were wanting to buy with that discount?"

Totally an innocent question!

"Who says I haven't already?" she asked, equally innocently. "But nothing in particular springs to mind. Usually I'm just there to visit with the pretty shop girls."

Of which she meant Val and Karla. Emma so wasn't visiting with Raven.

"I haven't visited Karla in too long," Jack mused. "I should check in on her sometime. Try to be an even worse influence before I'm off again."

"I think between the two of us, we can manage to corrupt her a little bit more before the end of the summer," Emma teased. "She's already grown leaps and bounds from being that skinny little thing in oversized boys' shirts."
