The Perk, Thursday Afternoon

Ronan settled at a table near the front of the Perk, a London Fog steaming softly as he waited for it to cool juts slightly.

Setting his laptop, a Macbook Air -- with the Apple logo rather distinctly lacking the traditional bite, if anyone cared to notice -- in front of him, Ronan got to work letting anyone relevant know that he was back on Earth generally, and back at Fandom specifically.

Jack was on his way out of the Perk and back to work, coffee in hand, when he paused by Ronan's table. It had been two very long years, but he wasn't in the habit of forgetting those he ... connected with.

As it were.

"Ronan?" he asked. "It's been ages. What brings you to town?"

"Jack!" Ronan greeted him in return, smiling broadly. Indeed, one does remember such important... connections. "Far too long, really. I've come back to work at the clinic; I've been away from Earth pretty much since I left school, and it seemed the perfect opportunity to finally get back.

"What about you?" he asked. "Visiting, or are you living here, too?"

"Living here, for for the summer," Jack said, pulling out a chair near Ronan's. The law offices were not going to run away if he took a slightly longer break.

"I'm reading law -- well, pre-law -- in London, but I felt like taking a summer break. I'm working in the law office and at Caritas." A beat. "Where were you before you came back here?"

Ronan made a bit of a face at the mention of law. "Better you than me," he said. "I couldn't stand doing law.

"I've mostly been travelling the galaxy? A good friend of mine helps run the Crossings -- it's a worldgating facility in my universe, the biggest one in our part of the Milky Way. The last year, I've specifically been doing internships at a bunch of different medical facilities." He shrugged. "I'm looking at heading to university -- eventually -- for medicine, although I haven't even decided if I want to look at on- or off-world schools, yet."

"Better you than me on the medicine, too," Jack said, amicably enough. He'd never had any drive to learn more than he needed to know to wrap up a gash. "But that sounds amazing. I've still never been off this planet."

"Well, we can fix that easily enough," Ronan pointed out. "There's a major worldgating facility in New York City. Easiest way to get to the Crossings, and I've got a fair bit of credit saved up for transports. There are some great restaurants at the Crossings, too."

"I'd like that," Jack said. "You don't want to get too settled here, after all. When should we go?"

"Whenever's good for you," Ronan suggested. "I work Mondays at the clinic, but barring any emergencies, the rest of my week is currently free."

[As is my life, right now -- seriously, whenever's good for you!]

"Next Tuesday?" Jack suggested. "I'm sure you'd like the weekend to settle in, and my days at work are today and Sunday. This was meant to be my coffee break."

Ronan nodded. "Tuesday sounds great! We can head across the causeway to the mainland -- the normal mainland, there's a portal, yes? I can jump us up to New York from there, and we can ask the cats about the worldgates."

Yes, Jack. The cats.

"The cats." Jack tilted his head, putting a stress on the word. "Is this slang, or do you mean meow-meow catnip kind of cats?"

"Meow-meow catnip," Ronan confirmed. "Felines have the natural ability to see hyperstrings, which is what the worldgates are formed of? So feline wizards have a tendency to be called to the task of running them."

"Last time I saw you I would have argued," Jack said, blinking a bit. "But now I've met talking unicorns, so I can be far more sanguine. Feline wizards. Of course."

Ronan nodded. "Pretty much every species has wizards, at least on my world," he explained. "Not just on Earth, either. It has to do with the Choice -- each species is offered it when they're mature enough, whether to fight the Lone Power or not. If they choose to fight... wizards."

"That makes me wonder what chooses not to fight," Jack mused. "Since I would have taken cats for the lazy type."

"Most species do," Ronan said. "Any that don't... The Lone Power rules them."

[Sorry -- Dad called me out to help pile firewood, ugh. ^^;; And now I am heading home -- be back in an hour or so!]

"So they all pick a side," Jack said, tilting his head to the side. "This interests me. We have magic at home, but our animals are just animals, as far as I know. I should ask a sorcerer sometime to make sure."

[OOC: No worries, I vanished too.]

"To be fair, I am... oversimplifying, to a degree?" Ronan allowed. "I'd go into more detail, but I don't want you being late back to work." He grinned. "And -- I think to a degree, wizards of any species, especially the so-called 'lower' species, kinda... get a boost? I've had some conversations with some very stupid cats, who weren't wizards."

"I should get back to work, shouldn't I?" Jack smiled. "It's just always nice to catch up with someone. But you can tell me more about cats -- stupid and not -- on Tuesday."

"In fact, you'll have a chance to meet some," Ronan pointed out, grinning. "Anyway, I'm looking for a house in town, but right now I'm at the Arms, room 312. If you ever get the urge to stop by." His smile widened, just a little. "My door's always open."

Jack laughed at that smile. "Funny, I'm just down the hall -- 324. I think I can find it in me to walk that far if I have a spare moment."

He couldn't offer quite the same open-ended invitation as Ronan, because Emma seemed to have decided she preferred his hotel room to the dorms. (He hardly blamed her.) But that was no reason not to make friends, was it?

Ronan caught the lack of invitation, but it didn't overly bother him -- there were any number of reasons Ronan could think of alone that would mean he would be unwelcome in the room, while still being welcome to a presence in Jack's life (however Jack wished to boundary that presence).

"I look forward to it," Ronan said, laughing a little back. "Otherwise, until Tuesday!"

"Til Tuesday," Jack agreed, rising from his seat and giving Ronan a little wave as he headed for the door.
