Chopped! [Community Center, Thursday evening, July 21st]

"Welcome back t' the greatest cooking class ever conceived!" Jack crowed, clapping his hands together. "Tonight we have very special treats waiting for ye in your baskets."

Are you afraid? Good.

"The set up is the same as last week: 20 minutes to cook your appetizer, 45 minutes for your main course, and 30 minutes for dessert. Your time starts...now!"

Jack loved getting free food every week.

Millie made a grilled watermelon and zucchini 'salad' beside a spicy sardine delight which was warmed and topped with pepperjack cheese. She thought the spiciness of the sardines balanced nicely with the sweeter watermelon salad.

Jane had been spending some time looking over a few cookbooks in what little spare time she had to better inspire her for the challenge of this class. Part of her brain said it was a little bit silly to spend part of her day throwing random ingredients together for a pirate, but, really, then she reasoned that Captain Sparrow actually sort of needed someone to make sure he ate decently, the poor thing.

And so there she was, scratching her head a little at her basket. Well, then, let's see...

The zucchini she sliced up into thin little 'crackers,' each of which she topped with a carefully balled piece of melon with a sardine on the side and a little sprinkling of shredded cheese on top. If anything, it looked cute.

Deadpool made nachos. And tossed all of that on top of them.

Because he was the best freakin' cook on this entire island. "Booyah!"

It was lucky that Millie could magically move things around as she worked because wooly mammoth shoulder took a long time to braise properly. She made a gravy with the drippings, flavored with ancho chiles and served it over a yucca dish, similar to garlic potatoes with small bits of dill pickle mixed in.

As she did the final touches on the plate, she magicked her used dishes over to the sink for washing.

Jane took one look at the wooly mammoth shoulder and couldn't help muttering, "Well, at least it's local..."

There was no way she could get that to roast, so she cut the mammoth into itty bitty delectable (hopefully) tidbits and sauted them with the chilies and some onions. She founds some bread and toasted it, added a slice of tomato and some lettuce, and then used the yukka and dill pickles on the side, like a good old sandwich should be served! Pity she hadn't time to make some chips...

"Mmmmm, mammoth shoulder."

Whoever was supposed to be trying this food was probably not going to be the happiest camper as Deadpool used all of the ancho chiles to mix into the meat. Which he turned into a hamburger. With a pickle.

He didn't know what the hell a yucca was, so he stuck a knife in it and made it a garnish.

Millie made a prosecco and raspberry gelee (http://www.bonappetit.com/recipes/2011/07/prosecco-raspberry-gelee). Of course, normally, the gelee would have taken several hours to, well, gel, but with a bit of carefully applied magic, it was set well within the time limit.

While her gelee was setting, she chopped up the chestnuts with a bit of bacon and sauteed them together before making them into a bit of a paste. Then she cut her tortillas into interesting bite-sized shapes, gave them a quick fry in the pan where she'd cooked the chestnuts and bacon to crisp them up a bit, and lightly sugared them.

She served the gelee and slightly sweetened chestnut-bacon paste in complementary colored small dishes surrounded by the crisped up tortilla 'chips' with directions to use them like scoops or toast points to eat the gelle and chestnut-bacon topping.

Once more, Jane seemed to be under the impression that the alcohol in the basket was just as much for her as for the meal. It took a little bit of thinking with this one, but most of Jane's time was going to be used in making a nice little angel cake, which she dressed with sliced strawberries, sliced chestnuts, and sliced Canadian bacon.

And as for the wine...well, she was just going to drink a little bit more and...drizzle it on the cake. Somehow, she couldn't exactly see Captain Sparrow saying now to a wine-soaked angel cake. Next time, maybe he'll make it rum.

Well, If Jack enjoyed bacon and chestnut burritos, he was in luck! If not? He could share the bottle of prosecco with Deadpool.

Who was drinking straight from the bottle, thanks.

Millie presented her lovely spicy sardine with watermelon salad (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229839029#t229839029) first. She followed it up with her braised mammoth with ancho chile gravy over garlic and dill pickle yucca (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229839285#t229839285), and ended with her prosecco and rasperry gelee, chestnut-bacon paste, and sugared tortilla bites (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229839541#t229839541).

"I do hope you enjoy them, Captain," she said with a smile.

"Oh, you know," she said with a bit of a blush. "A little kitchen magic."

Enchantress style.

"Well... I could probably teach you some of the basics of cooking," Millie hedged. Starting with a good clean-up, she thought. "Though, I suppose it's possible you have some talent for magic. Many do, you know."

"A pointy hat?" Millie asked uncertainly. She put a hand to her head to see if somehow the island had added one since she'd left the house. Luckily there didn't seem to be. "Why no. Hats really don't have anything to do with magic, in my experience."

"No broomstick," Millie said with a gin. "I do have a cat, but I don't need her to do magic. She is magic herself."

"Really." She smiled at him. "I've always been rather fascinated by monkeys, but I've never actually met one."

Millie laughed. "You're probably right. Some things are best thought of from afar."

"Hello, again, Captain Sparrow." Jane pulled herself up proudly, to cover up the fact that she might not be incredibly proud of her dishes, but that's why she was feeling glad this class was run by a pirate. "For you this week, I've managed to put together some light...let's say...almost pub food, if you will, with a nice watermelon-dressed zucchini cracker appetizer (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229841333#t229841333), followed up by a delightfully robust mammoth chili sandwich (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229841589#t229841589) for a main course. Last, but not least, we have a wine-soaked angel cake (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229841845#t229841845)," surely, that had to catch his attention, "with strawberry, chestnut, and bacon topping. I do hope you enjoy..."

And, if not, well, food poisoning couldn't be any worse than scurvy, right?

And that would be Jane, preening like a peacock, not so much over the quality of her food, but merely at the sheer power of her deductive reasoning.

After, of course, daintily covering a faint hiccup from her own consumption of quite a bit of the prosecci.

"So, I made you some nachos (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229842101#t229842101), a burger (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229842613#t229842613) and a burrito (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/5987509.html?thread=229842869#t229842869)." A beat. "And I'm getting a little tipsy, so I think this is the best class ever."
