Bod liked this sort of weather. Yes, he was cold too and he would have preferred it maybe a few degrees warmer but he liked the crisp bite of cold weather upon first stepping outside and he liked the way things looked so calm and serene when they were covered by snow. And right now, he liked being inside a warm building, enjoying himself by helping prep the food for today and cleaning up the dining area before the diner was opened up.

He was hopping back and forth between kitchen and dining area but he's around!

Caroline enjoyed bearing witness to some nice hopping and found herself drawn inside after picking up a coffee at the Perk. Okay, and it helped that the special board was covered with nachos, shh. "Tell me it's not wrong to eat nachos with my coffee!"

Bod was wiping down the counter when she came in and he couldn't help a chuckle at that. "Well, I wouldn't recommend mixing coffee and nachos together but what's so wrong with having a meal of coffee and nachos? It'll warm you up, I bet."

"The coffee is the warming part, the nachos is just because they taste good," she pointed out, leaning against a part of the counter she hoped was dry. "I so don't think of nachos as like, a cold weather food. More like a food my mother would roll her eyes at me eating as much as I do because of the complete lack of green."

Bod chuckled again and tossed the towel over his shoulder so he could grab a notepad and a pen in case she did want to order.

"Well, your mum's not here and there are several spices in these nachos since I helped prep them," Bod assured her with a light smile. "It might not be a cold weather food but they will be warm and spicy so it might help with the chill in the air. And I won't tell your mum that there aren't any greens in the nachos. Our secret."

"Sweet," she agreed happily enough. "Since you're all cute with the cafe worker thing, it'd be all wrong for me not to order the buffalo nachos for here and the jerk pork nachos to go. Shh, I'm hungry. And I'm sure I can con someone into sharing them with me later. Nachos totally reheat, right?"

Scribbling the two orders of nachos down, Bod handed the sheet of paper back to the cook so he could get started on both orders. Then, he took up his space back behind the counter and tried not to blush at the cute comment.

"I think as long as you don't wait too long to reheat them, you'll be fine," Bod replied, nodding. "Within the day should be fine. Tomorrow or the next, it might not be because of the cheese and sauces. They might end up rather hard lumps of flavor. Better for throwing than eating."

"Ooh, good thing to remember for food fights," Caroline pointed out. "So what have you been up to, Bod who I never see other than in classes but then it's too hard to talk because there's like, an explosion of confetti happening?"

"Oh, I've joined the army." No, he hadn't done that and would probably never do that but he was in a good mood and the harmless lie came out unbidden. At least he could probably sell it quite well since he tended to be calm enough and didn't have many tells. "I start in the fall."

"What? So you're leaving school?" Caroline's jaw dropped as she tried to process this. "Like, you are going to go shoot people for a living?"

"There...are other things to do in the army that don't involve shootings people." Weren't there? Honestly, Bod hadn't done that much research on military branches.

"I thought about being a battalion chef or perhaps even that fellow that plays the bugle in the morning to wake everyone up."

And there, the light fib might have wobbled but he wasn't intending for it to go on too long.

"What? You know like, people have to audition to play music in the army. Or is that the Marine Corps? But wait, will they even let you in, being all British and stuff?" Caroline was seriously confused by this idea. "When are you leaving? Did you tell Jake?" Because he hadn't told her and she might have to throw a fit at the lack of sharing.

"Well, I'm am American citizen thanks to Silas so I wouldn't think enlisting would be that much of an issue. If I was willing to fight for the country, wouldn't they want to take any able bodied person?"

But, he shook his head and went to retrieve a newly made pot of coffee. "But, all of that's moot because I was just teasing you. I haven't told Jacob anything because there's nothing to tell. I'm not joining anything military related. The uniforms look rather uncomfortable for one. Sorry about that. Your reaction was adorable though!"

Caroline maturely stuck out her tongue in response to hearing he'd been screwing with her. "That's just wrong, oh my God," she told him. "I mean, sure, leave, go do something fun, but don't make me think you're going off to get shot at! You might as well stay here with us monsters!"

"Wouldn't there have to be a war of some kind for me to be sent into a battle zone?" Bod wondered curiously.

"Well...the time I'm from totally has all these little not!wars going on. Nowhere is safe, my friend," she warned. "Otherwise everyone would want to be in the army."

"Well, I have no intentions of joining the army so rest easy," Bod said, shaking his head. "As for what I've been up to, most of my time's been spent working, going to classes and spending time in Kansas with Kate's family."

"Right, the Midwest," Caroline had to work hard not to smirk. "Sounds like fun. You get along well with her family, huh? But sure, who wouldn't you get along with."

"She's leaving come summer's end so I was just helping her get settled back with her aunt," Bod explained, shrugging. "You girls, you have quite a lot of stuff and that's only highlighted when you have to move."

"It's true enough," she agreed, kind of wondering how Bod was coping with the idea of not being able to see his girlfriend anytime he wanted. "I know I just keep kind of amassing shoes anytime I go anywhere, try as I might to be minimalist."

Bod was just envisioning many portal trips. He'd start racking up frequent portal miles as soon as she left.

"You know how many pairs of shoes I have?" Bod asked, amused. "Five and I still think that's too much. I'd get overwhelmed if I had more than that."

"Oh God, you so never need to see my closet," Caroline warned with a laugh. "I have like, rows of boxes. Of course, with this snow, none of them are seeing the light of day and I'm like, coping with hiking boots since all my winter stuff got sent home." Like a moron. "How many pairs of like, nice shoes do you have?"

"Two. I have one pair of sneakers and two pairs of boots," he filled in, almost sounding sheepish. "I didn't have a lot of money when I left the graveyard and then I just didn't really feel the need to buy shoes since my other ones were holding up fairly well. I wanted to get as much use out of them as I could."

"Right, and fashion's obviously not your first priority," she said, not meaning it meanly. "And really it shouldn't be mine, I just can't help enjoying that stuff. It's not like I have anything better to do, right?"

"I leave all the fashion fads to those that are better at it," he agreed with a shrug. "I'm better at just wearing slacks and shirts. I've moved on from the shifts I wore in the graveyard so I would say that's something."

To her second thought, he suggested, "You could start a babysitting service!" No good reason for that other than to snicker at the suggestion.

"Babysitting? Who the hell has babies around here?" No, Caroline didn't pay a lick of attention to the old people on the island.

They were old.

"I didn't just on the island," Bod said, laughing. "You could expand your services to the many mainlands we've visited. I bet you're quite good with children."

"Oh God, Bod, you are totally delusional or maybe just really mean to me today," she told him, crossing her arms. "I am not good with children. I am a vampire. I'm supposed to like, eat children."

"And I was raised by a vampire and he didn't eat me," Bod reminded her with a slight smile. "What about a puppy? You could start a dogsitting service! I could see you with eight different leashes and big dogs wrapping around your legs."

He was just teasing, Caroline. Promise!

"Oh, I have my hands full with one puppy already," she told him. "I can't imagine trying to deal with a whole kennel."

"...please tell me you don't walk Jacob," Bod said, maybe taking it too literally but that was what she got.

"Ha! Can you imagine the look on his face if I tried? Okay, so maybe I would totally try if they made collars that big," she teased, laughing at the idea. "You can't deny you'd laugh if I did it!"

"Why would I even try to deny that?" Bod wondered, shaking his head. "Of course I'd laugh and I'd even go through the motions of figuring out how to take a picture with my phone just to get one of that particular scene."

"Oh my God, I would kill for that photo," she admitted. "Granted, then Jake would kill me, but it'd be totally worth it. I enjoy tormenting him maybe a little too much. I'm even making him come to a party this weekend - oh! You and Kate should totally come! It'd be good, then you could provide male moral support and I could try to make your girlfriend like me. See? Win-win!"

"It's a karaoke party, isn't it?" Bod asked now that he'd seen the invites. He tended to check his email maybe once or twice a week. "Would I have to sing?"

As he asked, he turned around and finally retrieved her nachos since they were up and ready to go.

"I don't really sing but moral support might be possible. And I'm sure if I attend, Kate will come with. I can't guarantee the whole making nice thing. Kate's strong willed. So are you."

"I so would not make you sing," Caroline promised, gleeing over her nachos. What? Food was almost as good as blood. "And when I say try to make Kate like me, what I mean is not actually run her off by being myself at her face."

"I doubt she'll run off," Bod said, going about wrapping up her second order of nachos for easy carrying and protection from the snow outside. "She'd be more likely to actually try and hit you than run. Hopefully it doesn't come to that, though. No one should hit anyone."

"God, a few months ago I would've loved for her to hit me," Caroline admitted. "But you're right, it doesn't actually do anyone good. Especially when last I heard, she wasn't particularly gifted with powers, right?"

"Well, she's been learning how to handle a knife but unless there's something dormant in there, no, she has no mystical powers," he said, shrugging. "Despite that, she's incredibly resilient. Incredibly."

"Ooh, knives," Caroline tried to seem impressed. Okay, so she was bad at faking some things. "I'm sure she's awesome with it, though I bet my fangs would still win."

Um.

"Not that I'd bite her!"

"I would prefer that you not, yes," Bod said, chuckling lightly. "And I haven't seen her use her knife either. I'm not particularly fond of weapons and I'm no good with them so I tend to stay away from them. The last time I used a weapon was...out of desperation."

"I'm guess that means you weren't just like, cutting a steak," she remarked. "But then, I'm not much for weapons either. It's my understanding that bullets hurt."

"I'm quite glad you don't know that from firsthand experience," Bod laughed, shaking his head. "Let's keep it that way. I don't have any experience with those either. No one's stabbed me either and I'd like to keep it that way. You probably don't need weapons though, do you? Silas never did and I know he did his fair share of fighting."
