Caritas: Friday Night

Jessica was still wearing her tiara come Friday. Really, it was never leaving her head except when she was sleeping or showering. She was a princess, and everyone should know that.

Like Charlie had anything better to do on a Friday night when there wasn't a game on the TV.

Okay, the TV was on the fritz, and hitting it wasn't working, so he figured he might as well get to the bar.

"I'll take a beer."

"Any particular kind?" PRINCESS Jessica asked. She'd had a few sips of beer before becoming a vampire and thought it was gross and didn't quite understand why there were so many different kinds.

"Get me a Coors," Charlie said. "I'm feeling a little like tapping the Rockies tonight."

Somewhere, far, far a way, a wolf with blondish fur was facepawing.

"Comin' right up," Jessica said.

She poured half a bottle into a glass and slid them both across the bar to Charlie. "Anything else?"

"That should do it for now, hun."

This, really, was more like it. Pasty teens who probably weren't really old enough to legally be working at a bar serving him a good cold one was just like what he was used to in Forks. He would just pretend it was winter and she'd called him Sheriff, and he wouldn't know anything different.

He passed a glance around the room. "Usually this slow on a Friday night?"

Jessica shrugged a little. "Sometimes it's real busy on Friday nights, and sometimes nobody comes in at all," she said. "Kinda depends on if it's finals week or people are visitin' or the weather or if something's invadin' the island."

"I'm going to assume," said Charlie, mostly because he didn't want to think about something like invasions, "that it's the weather. Not too bad. Kinda makes you want doubt all that global warming stuff, though."

"Well, that's on account of us bein' in the past or something and not on the east coast anymore," Jessica said. At least, that's what she'd heard. "It's still real hot in Louisiana. I went there over the weekend."

"Yeah?" Charlie feigned an interest, mostly because it meant not acknowledging that whole past and not east coast thing. "Never been there before. You like it?"

"Well, it pretty much sucked when I was growin' up," Jessica admitted with a dismissive wave. "But it got more interestin' when I got turned into a vampire and wasn't stuck at home anymore."

Charlie shook his head as he took a swig of his beer. The slang the kids used these days...He'd never get it.

"I can't say I really know how that is," he admitted. "I've been in Forks all my life until just recently. That's in Washington, by the way, so we're pretty used to the cold up there."

"So how'd you end up here from all the way up there?" Jessica said, figuring he meant the state and not the city of Washington due to the cold.

To that, Charlie really could only shrug and take another sip of his beer. "Things've got to change sometime, right? Why not now?"
