Jack only had two weeks of this job left, after the current one. And his focus for much of the summer had, sadly, been a bit lacking.

Therefore, he was hip-deep in case files today, trying to document all the things he should have documented by the end of last month. It wouldn't do to come to the end of the summer with no results.

Kate had... really been nowhere near the neighborhood after venturing to their current mainland for a bit of windowshopping, but a person was allowed to drop in on their friends, right?

Because that's what she was doing anyway. "Yo, is this where I'd come if I was in legal trouble?"

Normal greetings were for other people.

"If you did, you'd be the first of the summer," Jack answered, with a slight smile. "But in theory, yes. It's just a very quiet law office."

Normal greetings? What were those?

A pause. "Are you in trouble?"

[OOC: I spent all day yesterday meaning to ping you and I kept getting pulled AFK every time I got close. Yay Kate.]

"Well, not yet, but I might be after tonight?" Kate offered lightly, not really meaning it. She had no real intention of getting in trouble, thanks. Not in trouble with the law, anyway. "Ramona's throwing me a fake college party on the beach tonight."

[Aw, great minds think alike. Yay Jack!]

"Sweet of her," Jack observed, leaning way back in his chair and gesturing for Kate to sit down if she wanted. "What makes it a fake college party?"

"Well," Kate started, flopping down into a chair, "it's meant to, like, simulate the experience of a college party with like, beer pong and shit, 'cause I'm gonna be missing out on all of that."

"So you definitely decided not to go." He wasn't exactly disapproving, but it was clear he didn't understand the decision. "And I feel like I'm wasting my college experience. A year in, and we haven't played beer pong once."

"Well, you're doing that in England, maybe it's different there," Kate shrugged. "And yes, it's definite. I'm still waiting for Mitchell to realize that. And my parents."

Epic hissyfits all around, she was sure.

"And I don't live on campus, and I've no interest in fraternities," Jack added. "Besides, they're civilized and let us into pubs."

He considered what Kate was saying. "I changed my mind at the last minute," he offered. "But that was because apparently I can't do what I want to do without a degree anymore." Modern times, sheesh. "If you want to make your own way ... good luck helping them all see reason."

"I don't know if I need to make anyone see reason, per se," Kate mused. "I just need to get them to accept that it's my life and I can be as unreasonable with it as I want to."

"If you're doing it because you want to be unreasonable, it'll be a harder sales job," Jack offered with a little shrug. "You're right, though. It is your life."

"I'm not wanting to be unreasonable," she snorted. "I just meant that I don't really care if I'm being that way from their perspective. Because it's my life, and I don't really know what I'm doing, but I do know college doesn't appeal to me."

"Better you not go than go when you don't really want to," Jack observed. "But you aren't putting it off so you and Bod can go together, or anything sentimental like that, are you?"

He hoped not. He thought better of Kate.

"Oh please, I don't even know if he wants to go to college or not," Kate replied, waving a hand. Incidentally, one with Bod's ring on it, but still. "And I'm a little more independent than that, thank you."

"I hoped so, but I've been wrong before," Jack said, then took note of the ring. "... new jewelry?"

"Hmh? Oh, this?" She held her left hand out so he could have a closer look at the ring on her middle finger. "It's, um, a promise ring. From Bod."

"Pretty," Jack said, leaning in closer. "How is that different from being engaged?"

Genuine question.

It sounded like one, plus Kate was always going to be giving him a little leeway because of his Victorian background. "In that it's not a promise to get married," she said. "In our case, it's just... a promise that we'll keep trying to make this thing work even after I move."

"That's so sweet, I can't even say anything funny about it," Jack said, with a small, closed-lip smile. "It's good to know someone will fight to keep you."

He wasn't sure he had that. He would fight for Sebastien, but he was no longer certain it went the other way.

Kate directed a shyish smile down at the ring. It was a rare thing to see, and even rarer if you didn't happen to be Bod.

"Yeah," she said. "He gave me this about a month ago. I gave him one last week."

"You're almost glowing," Jack said lightly. "Congratulations, and I'm glad you both stayed safe last week. I didn't see you, anyhow."

"Well, we were in Hawaii," she shrugged. "Because I flipped out at an opportune time, punched a dude, then really wanted to get out of town. And shut up, I'm not glowing."

But she was ridiculously happy.

"Grinning, then," Jack corrected. "And good for you. I wish I'd been in Hawaii. Who'd you punch?"

"Topher," Kate said, and rolled her eyes. It was thankfully getting a little easier to tell this story. "He found this video of me from when I was Princess Valhalla, which I didn't know was online, and he was a complete ass about it."

"Well of course," Jack said. "Because clearly he's never done anything foolish. Sounds as if he deserved it."

"That seems to be the consensus," Kate agreed. "When I went to see Mitchell straight after he just have me an icepack and moved my shift."

"Great minds," Jack suggested, then digressed a bit. "Oh, did you see him when he was a pony?"

Kate smirked. "So he was a pony." That would be a no. "He was very clear with telling me he hadn't been."

"I think that was because he didn't want anyone else telling him how pretty he'd been," Jack said. "He was purple with black and teal hair. Striking."

Kate snickered. Poor, poor Mitchell. "Oh, I knew it! I knew he was lying. Purple, seriously?"

"It was a fantastic color," Jack nodded. "It was fun -- my first night working at the bar, and I got to meet half of town as ponies."

"I met a bunch in my common room, they were pissy as hell." No surprise there, really. "Were they any more mellow at the bar?"

"Not really," Jack said. "Some of them calmed down once they got drinks with straws, but most of them weren't very happy about it."
