It was still early in the day when Jack typed the last sentence into his brief on the summer's findings and pressed the buttons to print it out. A few minutes of fiddling to put the packet together and drop it into Ms. Cabot's box, and this was it: He was well and truly done with his internship.

All that was left to do was a bit of tidying. He watered the plants, washed his coffee cup, packed it up with the books and papers he'd brought in over the course of the summer, and sat back at the desk to watch the phones and wait for any visitors.

And perhaps spend just a little time playing chess online.
