Cafe Luke's, Monday

"So, what do you think of it, boss?" The ~~NPC~~ short order cook who'd come packaged with the Luke's side of the Cafe Diem/Luke's Diner merger stood back, watching Vincent's face with hopeful apprehension.

Vincent rubbed his chin. He tilted his head to one side, then the other. He leaned in and took a mighty whiff, then a nibbling taste. His expression gave away nothing other than neutral contemplation.

"Well," he said. "It's definitely interesting. I'm just not sure the world is ready for calabash and pumpkin spice flavored tofu meatloaf cupcakes."

The short order cook pouted.

The NPC waiter might try to sell you on those tofu meatloaf cupcakes.

He'll just recommend root vegetable based foods from around the world.

"I want to celebrate being the right shape again. Gimme chocolate."

A cliche', but hey. Noms were good!

Vincent had no idea what shew as talking about, but he couldn't turn down a request for good comfort food.

"How about a Mexican chocolate milkshake? Creamy chocolatey milk goodness with just a smidge of cinnamon and habanero!"

Kenzi stared at him. "You, sir, are clearly some kind of superhero. One of those, yes-please. Hi, I'm Kenzi, I'll be your customer for the foreseeable future."

Vincent offered a hand. "Vincent. Always a pleasure to meet someone willing to eat more than what you can get in a retro themed chain diner!"

Kenzi shook his hand, beaming. "I can feed myself, but that's about it. So I appreciate adventures in fooood." Especially because of all the times she lived on cereal and ramen. "It is very good to meet you!"

"I'll bring that milkshake right out. So what did you turn into?"

"A guy," Kenzi said darkly. "I mean, a cute guy. But still. Everything was off. The clothes didn't fit. There was stubble... bad scene. Very glad it's over."

Wait, there'd been even more cute men on the island and Vincent had missed it?

"Huh," said Vincent. "Well, I'm sure you were adorable. Not that you aren't now, of course. You know, my friend, he's about your age, he turned into a dog right here at the counter, once."

Kenzi chortled and spun on the spinny-stool, and asked, "What kind? So far, let's see... roommate, teacher, and a friend have all turned into animals. I still don't know what Bo was, exactly. Maybe a kangaroo mouse, she was all tiny and had a pouch."

"One of those blonde loyal ones." Vincent didn't know much about non-robotic dogs.

"Awwwww. Who's your friend?" Why no, she wasn't planning on teasing someone about this, why do you ask?

"Jack Carter? I'm sure you've seen him, he's been all over that little variety show those cute little teens put on every week."

"Jack's my buddy!" Well. Kenzi thought of him as a friend. Jack probably thought of Kenzi as 'that crazy girl who needs to be watched.' "I missed him being a dog? So unfair. I was a raccoon once. I kind of invaded that variety show to mess with the buttons that time."

"Oh no, I must have missed that week!" Vincent served up the milkshake in a tall frosty glass with a little pinwheel straw. "I hope that Sam girl didn't ruin all your shirts for it."

"Well, she was a honey-badger at the time, I think..." Kenzi was distracted, forgive her. "Straw!!" She had to try it out immediately. And then Mmmmmmmm happily, licking her lips. "That. I can taste the cinnamon and oh my god that's rich, and that little sting of the cayenne... Is wonderful." Sluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurp. And tiny burp. "'Scuse me. I'm having a religious experience."

"Oh no, you go right ahead!" Vincent was in a little bit of love, here. He'd missed getting that kind of reaction.

Kenzi settled in to slurp some more, and said around the straw, "I didn't even think to have chocolate, when I was a guy, to see if it tasted the same... but I don't think it could've been better than this. HMMM." Happy happy happy. Kenzi finally broke away to say, "I am bringing my boyfriend here to fatten him up."

Right, like Kenzi couldn't do with several more meals. Or weeks of them.

"You've got yourself a sweetie? That's great! I love putting together date dinners."

"Yes, exactly." Kenzi beamed, kicking her feet. "Or maybe even a family thing this coming weekend, a friend of his is coming, I'd kinda like to make a good first impression. Usually, I don't care, but. He sounds like a good guy." Kenzi grinned. "How long have you been here in Fandom? Long enough to see a Parent's Weekend?"

"Sorry, sweetie. I've only been here since this summer."

"Mmmmph." Sluuuurp. Kenzi wasn't exactly looking forward to it. No one was going to show up for her. "Maybe something Canadian-kinda? We're both Canadian, so's his friend. It'd be nice. Or Russian?" She grinned. "But spicy, like this."

"Hmm." Vincent tilted his head thoughtfully. "Well, you don't get much habanero in Russian cuisine, but they do some fabulous things with onion, black pepper, garlic, and bay leaf. And you know, there's not much in this world that couldn't use a little gingery kick."

"Garlic, black pepper, yay. I am in favor of this proposal," Kenzi agreed. "Ginger? Really?" She was coming to the end of the shake, and she was sad. The straw made a little drizzling noise of loss. "Ooo, 'shrooms? Good 'shrooms? I never managed to get those right."

"I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you don't mean the magic kind," Vincent guessed. "You a portabella fan, or more of a shitake girl?"

"Shiitake," Kenzi said with a bounce, then sighing as she regretfully pushed the shake glass back. "That was terrific. Thank you so much. I feel like my chi is realigned for the week, you know?"

"Oh, I totally do. Chocolate, cinnamon, and a bit of spice, does the body good!"

Word to the wise: don't decide to audit your music collection for duplicates, unsorted files, and split artists at 3 AM. And certainly don't decide you can't go to bed until you've finished the entire thing.
