The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday

Everything seemed to be going fairly well until Mary caught sight of Gunther crying in the lobby. Apparently he had tried to call a good friend in Las Vegas, but his friend seemed to have disappeared. Mary figured it couldn't hurt to sit down and let Gunther cry on her shoulder. The problem with Gunther was that his face managed to migrate away from her shoulder and closer to her cleavage. Mary would have slapped him and walked away, but she just felt so bad when Gunther continued to sob.

Give her a reason to get away from Gunther.

River saw no reason not to stop by and talk to Mary. It would seem nice, wouldn't it? The hotel caused conflicting emotions - good memories of a girl she no longer was.

"I liked the towel animals."

Mary would notice if she cut them up, no doubt.

"River! Oh, look, Gunther, it's one of your former coworkers," said Mary, pushing Gunther away from her chest. "It's so good to see you again! I made sure that your room got a few extra towel animals. I've been working on some new ones."

River nodded, giving Gunther a neutral look. She hesitated for a moment, then asked: "Can I help cooking?"

The kitchen staff would know all the gossip.

"Sure, if you'd like," said Mary. "I'm sure the rest of the staff needs as much help as they can get as long as Gunther is, uh, distracted."

River smiled. "Distracted?"

Those memories were like fire. They burnt but were oddly tempting. Emotions stirred inside her in a way they usually didn't. That always happened in Fandom, and yet she hadn't refused when Kerrigan has asked her to go. On the contrary.

"It has something to do with a friend of his back home who is missing," said Mary, though she didn't quite understand. Sometimes Gunther's command of English wasn't that great, and people certainly couldn't disappear into thin air like he claimed.

River just tilted her head and smiled. The smile no longer came as natural, and she was unable to completely hide that feral hint to it.

The smile definitely seemed a little odd to Mary. It reminded her of the looks she used to get from drunks gamblers in Las Vegas.

"So, how is life after high school? You have to tell me all about your adventures. I don't really leave Fandom too often anymore," said Mary, trying to pretend that she hadn't noticed anything odd.

"I help Kerrigan," River said. "I get to dance a lot." The smile widened a little at the mention of 'dance'.

"Dancing? That must be a lot of fun. I haven't been dancing in ages," said Mary with a sigh.

"Why not?" River tilted her head.

The fact that she knew the answer didn't matter.

"Oh, I'm just too busy to get away from the hotel for very long," said Mary. It was a lie, of course.

It was a lie. "Are you sure?"

"Oh, yes! It's just busy, busy, busy around here," said Mary. taking the lie and running with it. In reality, she missed the Las Vegas nightlife but was afraid of getting caught up in the drinking that went with it.

River nodded, listening more to Mary's thoughts than her words. "You should try dancing without drinking."

It's a big lobby, with plenty of room to linger, chat with others, and try to figure out why the guy in the chef's uniform is sobbing hysterically.

Mary would like the world to end before Gunther gets grabby, but that would be too easy.
