Stark Industries, Monday
The weekend had been relaxing, but now it was Monday, and it was time to get back to work.
Ender opened up the store early, as was his wont, and set up his laptop. He hadn't had the time to go through his email that morning, so he was scanning the subject lines now, looking for replies to his mails.
It was strange - he was used to Carn being a pretty speedy correspondent, but it had been three days, and he still hadn't gotten a reply to some of his inquiries. Maybe that meant he had successfully slipped the leash and gone underground where Alai and Ender wanted him, but Ender didn't think so.
He brushed it off, and opened up Valentine's email next - only to find her talking about how she hadn't seen Dink or Carn or several of the colonists she'd made friends with, and no one else seemed to be concerned about it.
Ender sank back and eyed his screen. "Jane?" he said. "When was the last time Carn reported in?"
There was a strange silence - usually it didn't take Jane more than a picosecond to get this - before she answered. "No one by name of Carn Carby has been found in the records," she said.
Ender exhaled. "The files have been wiped?" he asked. "What's going on here?"
"They haven't been wiped. They just aren't here."
Somehow, Jane sounding worried wasn't exactly a boon to his peace of mind.

The files on Dink hadn't gone missing. He was hoping that was a good sign, at least.
