The Perk [all day]

Anakin, after leaving a note at his office at the school and trying Ralph's coffee at the Trooper Station, decided to relocate his office hours to the Perk today. If he drank a cup of non-decaf in the morning, he was pretty certain that Rory's pregnancy-enhanced supernose wouldn't be able to tell the difference by the time he returned home.

He opened his laptop, took a sip of caffeine (thank the Force for caffeine), and began typing:

It's been a really long month already. Anyone up for drinks tomorrrow night? School board's paying....

Then he began doing research into the next ethical dilemma he'd make his students live through.

Audrey needed her coffee, pure and simple, so it maybe wouldn't be a huge shock to see her stop in before heading down to the station.

"So you really were not kidding about this place," she greeted him once she'd gotten her drink.

"Sorry," Anakin said with a little smile. "I really wasn't."

"It's weird," she said, "even after hearing about the teaching pony I wasn't prepared for playing blocks with my landlord."

"Oh, right, everyone turned small," Anakin said, nodding. "That explains the uptick in petty theft reports."

"You mean you missed it?" Not that she knew how anyone could.

"My wife and I live in Georgetown," Anakin explained. "I commute. I got fifteen messages from Ralph where he asked if my 'fresher was running, then hung up giggling."

"So he might be who I have to blame for the crayon I cleaned off the walls of the station?" she guessed.

"Probably," Anakin replied, nodding. "Unless they were rude pictures--that was Cody, most likely."

"Right. Which one would he be?" Probably the one she'd been calling Cory all this time. She was bad with names, all right?

"The one with the hair," Anakin said. "Um. Shorter than Ralph's. Has a pin-up of a Twi'lek dancing girl behind his calendar he thinks I don't know about."

"Oh, that one," Audrey nodded. "Think I could get everyone to wear nametags?" Possibly forever?

Anakin looked dubious. "You could ask."

That did not sound promising. "Maybe," she said. "So how often do things like last weekend happen around here?"

"A few times a year," Anakin replied, nodding. "It gets really weird the week around before the Christmas holiday too."

"And why would that be?" she asked carefully.

"The island kind of gets into the spirit of things," Anakin explained, "and forces the rest of us too as well. So it'll rain potato pancakes, force you to wear a Santa hat, things like that."

"Oh. I thought maybe everyone just turned into elves," Audrey admitted.

"Not yet," Anakin said, "but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened some year."

"I'm kind of hoping I miss that," she said. "Pointy shoes hurt my feet."

"It's the jingly little bells that really get on my nerves," Anakin admitted, then frowned. "You've worn pointy shoes?"

"The heeled kind, not the elf kind," she assured him. "And bells were nowhere near involved."

"Good," Anakin said. "Not that I try to judge other people's life choices."

"Don't worry there. There'd have to be a lot of alcohol involved to get me to wear bells," she smiled.

"So you're saying we should watch you at New Year's Eve?" Anakin teased.

"Are you kidding me? Someone might actually do something crimelike. That'll probably mean I'm a good girl," Audrey pointed out.

"Good point," Anakin replied. "Hopefully nothing involving the pirate and indecent exposure."

She considered this, realizing that this may or may not be a good thing, having never seen the pirate. She finally settled on, "It can't be anything I haven't seen before."

"Now you're just jinxing it," Anakin scolded.

"That would be a really scary thing to jinx," Audrey said.

"The island has a slightly insane sense of humor," Anakin replied.
