Magic Box, Evening, Sunday, Dec. 4

It was unusual for Tara to be in the shop on a day when she didn't normally work, but she pretty much figured she could go back to a regular schedule when the crisis was over. Anyhow, the shop was functioning far more this week as Tara's personal magical research library and workspace than as a place where people actually bought things.

She'd brought Moxy to the shop with her. He lolled in front of a heating vent while Tara paged intently through a thick volume about gods of dreams. The 'auditor' concept was fascinating but hadn't really gotten her anywhere, so she was back to looking for dreamlords who might also have some interest in controlling reality.

It was slow going, but at least it was interesting.

For anyone who may want to haunt a magic shop.

If you want to get her off this particular train of thought.... or just bring her tea. She likes tea.

Merlin did indeed have tea. And a need for books that the library might not have.

"Hello?"

Tara held up a hand as she finished reading her paragraph, then glanced up.

And then bounced out of her chair grinning. Things were still awful, but that made every old friend who had made it to the island safe that much more valuable.

"Merlin!" she said. "Oh, wow. How long have you been in town? How are you? Or is that a really stupid question?"

Merlin smiled, shrugging slightly. "We arrived last week and it's going as well as I suspect for everyone. How are you?"

"About as good as anybody," Tara had to agree. "Lucky, maybe. I'm pretty sure my world is still mostly there, so..."

She shrugged. "Anyhow, I'm trying to figure out the magic behind this thing."

Same as everybody, except she liked the shop better than the library. The library didn't let her bring her cat.

"Anything so far?" he asked, slipping into the shop to look at the books. Oh, how he missed Gaius' collection right about now...

"Two theories," Tara said, gesturing toward the table heaped with books. "One is the auditors theory. They're ... somebody said they were kind of like bureaucrats, and they're getting rid of things they think are messy. Like people."

She bit her lip, clearly not liking that one. "I don't see how we stop it if that's right," she said quietly, before moving on.

"The other idea I have is that it's some kind of dream god that's gone rogue. The problem there is that everybody has a dream god, and they're ... you don't want to mess around and summon the wrong one. They aren't nice."

"...yes, summoning that would be a bad idea," Merlin said, eyes going wide. "Why would bureaucrats want to do all this? Wouldn't it be messier this way?"

No, Merlin. No.

"I don't know," Tara said, frustrated. "You can't just get rid of something, it totally messes everything up. Plus there should be signs -- leftover magic all over the place, and I don't see that."

She sighed. "Sorry. Long couple weeks."

"I understand that," he said sympathetically. "How can I help?"

"Do you have anything?" Tara asked hopefully. "Better than what I have, I mean."

"I only had time to grab a few books before--" Everything. "I don't really remember anything about dreams other than some nonsense involving invoking prophetic ones."

A beat.

"I just dreamed about marshmallows when I tried it."

"Maybe they were magical, super-powerful marshmallows," Tara said. "Demon marshmallows, even."

There was a smile sneaking around the edges of her face.

"Beedy, red eyes on them?" Merlin suggested. Because clearly it had to be true. "All we have to do to stop this is make s'mores!"

"If it turns out to be that simple, I am going to be totally convinced you're a genius," Tara decided.

"Be certain to inform Arthur first!"

"Think it would make him be nicer to you?"

Merlin pondered that. "Possibly for a week?"

"Hmmm," Tara mulled. "Hopefully you won't have to save the world every week to keep it going. That's get ... kind of old."

And a bit like both of their lives in canon.

"It does..." At least her canon had characterizational consistency?

Because I know what she's doing seems random: It's sort of a sideways Sandman reference. The books imply that each of the Endless has a special relationship with both the thing they're named for and its exact opposite -- Death and life, Destruction and creation, Delirium and reason -- and, one assumes, dreams and reality.

I may just like being an IMMENSE NERD, yes.

... and Sandman. I really, really like Sandman. Which is even less shocking, I know.
