Devil's Nest [Tuesday night]

There was no DJ tonight. When Jack asked, Tiny rolled his eyes and pointed toward the causeway.

"He lived on the other side?" Jack replied, wincing. "Tough break."

That sort of explained the sign he had up on the bar:

COME RAISE A GLASS TO OLD WHAT'S-HIS-FACE.

At least he'd spelled all of the words right?

No, Jack had not the first clue what the DJ's name had been.

Natalie hadn't really meant to come here. But, the island was living through a weird time, so weird things happened and besides, she knew Joan worked... not necessarily here but for the boss. Not that she'd come looking for her. Not that she'd come looking for anything.

She'd just sort of drifted, needing a walk, and had decided to stop by before heading back to the dorms. The world could be ending and she'd never been at a club before. Not that the Devil's Nest seemed that much like a club tonight.

She ordered a soda and settled at the bar, finding herself oddly grateful that there was no DJ.

Which is quiet and depressing tonight.

Where there was a quiet and depressed vampire tonight.

It was only because his phone's reception had gone wonky, okay, irritating mod-ing narrative? Eric didn't like any of you people.

Mostly.

Shut up.

Jaina could tell you now she wasn't going to be getting a good night's sleep (if she slept at all) with that thing outside the totally necessary force field, and after the other night she'd been wanting to check in on Eric anyway. So, two birds, one stone.

"You could look happier," said Jaina, who could also look happier.

"So could you," Eric said. "That sky is fucking creepy."

"The creepy sky's better than the alternative," she said, sitting. "I guess this means everything outside the Fandom bubble is gone."

"That would explain why my phone's been so buggy," Eric complained.

Other than things at home going badly, but he was Not Thinking About That.

"My comm's doing it, too," Jaina said. "I sent a transmission saying things really are that bad here, but I'm not sure it even got out."

"Good," Eric said before realizing that wasn't the best thing to say. "I mean, I'm glad it's not just me."

"I know," she told him. And considering she was sure he'd discovered that trying to call Pam or something, she asked, "So how are you doing?"

"Thinking of spiking my drink tonight," Eric admitted.

"That good, huh? Should you still need a distraction..." Especially since her night would probably otherwise involve a lot of expecting the forcefield to fail.

He smiled at her. "I'm always in the mood for a distraction."

It was hard to get a good smile going at a time like this when you were stressed, but Jaina managed it. "Good. Then we can both not drive ourselves crazy."

"Perhaps just your neighbors," Eric replied.

"I'm amazed we haven't gotten security called on us," she said, genuinely surprised.

"I think they'd just be jealous," Eric mused.

"I should probably not be as proud of that answer as I am," Jaina decided.

And here she thought she'd still be stuck on Completely Serious all night. She should really know better by now.

"Oh, you should totally be proud of that answer," Eric told her.

"This is why I keep you around," she said, mock serious. "The ego boosts."

"And I'm totally terrifying," Eric replied with a tiny grin.

"You say this like I need you to be totally terrifying at people," she said, sliding a little bit closer.

"Maybe if I go out and glare at the clouds, they'll go away," Eric mused, putting his hand on her knee.

"I tried that earlier, but I think you probably have a better glower," she said thoughtfully.

"Maybe we should try it together," Eric replied. "Scare the shit out of it."

Jaina laughed a little, and then, "...Seriously?"

He shrugged a ~~massive~~ shoulder. "Do you think anyone else has tried to?"

"Probably not," she said. And actually, maybe there was something she could do with the Force. She doubted experimenting there could hurt. "Okay then."

It was a more somber Joan than usual who sauntered into the bar tonight, peeling off her hat and gloves. After getting herself a drink, she wandered over to Eric. "Is there anything you need me to do specifically on the island? Since, you know, it really doesn't seem likely that I'll be able to get much done off of it...."

"Don't disappear on me?" Eric suggested. "It seems like more of a possibility tonight."

"I'll do my very best," she promised dryly, taking a seat. "Are you missing anyone back home, other than your wonderful dayman back in Louisiana? I certainly miss him."

"He's efficient but not very personable," Eric understated wildly. "I'm having problems getting through at all tonight. I blame the weather."

Yes, Eric. The weather.

"That certainly is it," Joan decided, slanting a look at him because who was she to argue? "I'm inclined to blame those silly little contraptions themselves, personally."

Still not a fan of the cell phone, no.

"You don't like your phone?" Eric asked. "Would you prefer an iPad?"

Beat.

"Assuming an Apple Store still exists somewhere."

"I also have no idea what those are," she replied, tilting her head at him with a slight smile.

Eric reached for his phone, then frowned. "And I can't pull up a picture to show you. It's a really flat computer."
