Which . . . totally didn't explain why he was making ratatouille.

Previous to her life of fighting crime in Gotham, Hayley Fitzpatrick had been the best damn waitress ever known in a diner not far into the mainland from Fandom. So it was almost falling back on old habits when she stopped in to the diner looking... well, slightly famished but wide-eyed and eager.

"So... who's in charge around here?" she asked in a polite and bouncy tone.

"That'd be me," Vincent said, slinging his rag over his shoulder. "You looking for something to eat, hon?"

"Boy, am I ever," Hayley said. "But I was actually wonderin' if maybe this place needed a waitress or something. I just moved back to the island and I'm kinda in the market for a job."

She put on her best eager-to-please smile.

It worked. Of course, Vincent had a soft spot for . . . pretty much everyone in general, anyway. "We could always use an extra couple of hands. You got any experience?"

"Oh, absolutely," Hayley said. "I used to work in this diner not far from here, I could even give you their number if you want a reference."

She bounced just a little. "I can waitress and bus a mean table."

"Well, that sounds pretty good to me," Vincent said cheerfully. "I love your enthusiasm! You wanna give it a try for a bit today, see if you like it? The freezer especially takes some getting used to." A pause. "And a small shuttle to navigate it."

"What's so special about the freezer?" Hayley had to ask after a description like that. "I can adjust to just about anything."

"It's very large," Vincent explained. He dug under the counter and pulled out a map, displaying a freezer floor plan larger than the diner itself. "And powered by a nuclear reactor, but you don't need to worry about that."

Hayley gawked slightly at the map. "Where do you keep it all?"

"You know, I'm not sure?" Vincent shrugged. "You just go through the door and there you are. I like to pretend it's like in Mister What."

"Well I guess that's the way of things here," Hayley said. "I guess I would like to give it a try today. But unless your freezer attacks me, I doubt it'll be anything I won't like."

"Great! I've got some things I could use if you want to explore a bit. Think of it like a scavenger hunt." Vincent pulled out his order pad and scribbled down a list of ingredients, then pulled out a wire basket. "Here you are. And there are spare coats just inside, if you need one."

"I'll grab one," Hayley said, knowing she got cold easily. "And I'm good at hunting things down."

She took the list and the basket. "You just wait, I'll be everything you ever wanted."

Vincent waved a hand. "Now don't worry about that. Just be everything you already are, and I'm sure you'll do fine."
