Mary was exhausted. Someone (most likely Gunther) had been prank-calling her room all night. She could have taken her phone off the hook to get some sleep, but she was afraid of missing any legitimate phone calls. She was paying for that decision today. There was a pretty good chance that someone might catch her asleep at the front desk.
