Outside MST 3000, Friday Evening

Okay. So maybe, despite all their nights of drinking with the rest of the guys, Topher had never hung out with just Tony and Billy before. And maybe he had sort of appreciated that, because hanging out with both of them at once was weird since, you know, it was Tony and also Billy and they were both sort of... important and whatever. But they were also both really cool (hello, it was Tony and Billy), so it wasn't like he was going to say no to a night of hanging out with them and seeing a dorky movie. That would just be insane.

So. Topher waited outside the theater, shifting from foot to foot and not looking awkward at all. Nope. Nothing about this was going to be weird, no matter what you could tell from his face or his posture or simple common sense.

And then he got a text from Tony and frowned.

"Huh," he said.

Okay, if Tony was bailing, it was possible that this night had just gotten even weirder.

There was definitely something different about the idea of hanging out with just Tony and Topher, and not just because there wouldn't be alcohol involved in their movie viewing. Billy had been looking forward to this all day - all week, even - and while he'd felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, he hadn't checked it yet, figuring he could sneak a quick glance once he was with the others. It'd be rude to show up late, right? Right.

"Hey," he said, waving to Topher once he spotted him.

"Hey," Topher said, looking... slightly distracted by his phone. Oh man, this was going to be so awkward. Then with a slight blush, he amended, "I mean, hi." Shoving his phone back into his pocket, along with both hands, he shifted from foot to foot for a moment and then said, "So... what's up?"

Smooth, this guy.

"Nothing much," Billy said, taking the blush as nervousness about being around Tony. He totally got how that felt. "Is Tony on his way?"

"Uh, maybe?" Billy said, pulling out his cell phone and reading the text. "Oh." Yeeeeeah, awkward. "Maybe he needs a quiet night after yesterday."

"Sure," Billy said, possibly a little too quickly. "I mean, we're both here, right? I don't have anything else to do tonight, and I was looking forward to hanging out with you too, not just Tony."

"Cool," Topher said, sounding relieved. "I mean. Me too. The only other thing happening tonight is the Space Battles marathon on SyFy, and they're only up to the prequels now, so, um. Yeah."

He swung his arms forward awkwardly, shrugged, and said, "Sooo... tickets?"

"So there's plenty of time before they get to anything worth watching?" Billy said with a laugh as he went over to the ticket window, and was promptly informed that their tickets had already been taken care of.

"That was awfully nice of Tony." Oh yes, he was a complete altruist.

"...yeah," Topher said after a moment's pause, squinting at the ticket like it held all the secrets of the universe. Or at least the answer to what the hell was going on tonight. "But, um. Yeah! So this movie's 133 minutes, and then, um, if you want, when we get back to the dorms we should be just in time for the last ten minutes of Backstroke. Which would be kinda cool. If you wanted."

The fact that Topher could do all of that math in his head made Billy grin. "That'd be very cool. Balance out the regular action movie with some sci-fi action and all."

"'Kay. I can, um. Get some," Topher offered, heading over toward the counter. "What kind of stuff do you like?"

Except as soon as he got to the counter, he was handed a massive tray full of ALL THE SNACKS and was told they'd already been paid for.

"Huh."

"Is all of that for us?" Billy asked, staring at the tray. "Maybe Tony felt guilty for having to bail. Do you, uh, want some help?"

Billy happily grabbed handfuls of food to lighten Topher's load. "This is going to be a pretty epic sugar high if we eat it all," he said with a laugh.

"I think this movie's been out for a while? And the island's pretty small, when you really think about it," Billy said, carefully taking a seat while balancing his snack load. "I don't mind though, it means less worrying about people being idiots during movies."

"The problem with torrents is the cameras are always so shaky," Billy said. It seemed silly to pretend he didn't do that sort of thing around Topher. "It really is nice to have someone to go with. I'm glad you wanted to stick around."

That made Billy grin even more, and he tried to hide it by sifting through the snacks to see what they'd come away with. "You say that like it's obvious or something," he said. "I'm really glad you're okay. I had no idea we'd be getting into so much trouble."

Hopefully, Topher wasn't paying too much attention to Billy's blushing either. "I'm glad I was there. We've just got to teach you how to run. I'm not athletic either, but I think it might be a necessary skill in both of our futures."
