Cafe Luke's, Monday

Vincent was pleased to no longer be a woman, but that wasn't going to stop him from missing all that hair.

Maybe it was time to let his grow out. Just a little.

After a couple of days of odd -- yet weirdly not-suspicious -- looks at her and Sloth, Zinzi was really starting to wonder about this place. As far as she could tell, no one here had ever even heard of zoos. Which didn't seem possible.

But it would make this a damn good place to start over.

She nodded to the man behind the counter as she came into the diner, Sloth slung in his usual place on her back.

"You got any of that kale without garlic?"

Vincent flashed her a broad smile. "Sure thing, honey. Fresh or cooked?"

Zinzi glanced at Sloth, who let out a small squeak. "Raw," she said. "As plain as you can make it."

She didn't need to end up dealing with a sick sloth on top of everything else.

"Well, isn't that the cutest!" Vincent said, catching sight of Sloth. "Student, robot, or actual sloth?"

It was like these people spoke in code.

"Sloth," she confirmed. "That gonna be a problem?"

Vincent let out a soft hum. "Well . . . is it a service animal?"

Zinzi stared at him, nonplussed.

Well, if he didn't know what a zoo was, she wasn't about to try explaining it. And "service animal" was close enough. Sloth definitely provided her with an important service.

"Yeah. Okay."

Vincent nodded. "Well, try and say it a bit more certain than that if the Health Department shows up. But I'll let you slide."

Zinzi nodded. "Fair. Thanks."

Vincent brought out a plate of fresh kale and set it down where he thought the sloth would be able to reach it. "Anything for you, then, hon? You name it, I can cook it."

Zinzi did some quick mental calculations, then shook her head. "Not unless you're willing to make a trade." She took note of the threads coming off of Vincent, especially the fact that most if not all of them led well off into the distance. She didn't think he'd need the help of her shavi, but she could maybe offer to write him some copy or something.

Vincent gave her a concerned look. "Are you looking for a job, hon?"

That hadn't been the plan. Zinzi was about to open her mouth to say so, when Sloth jabbed her under the ear with a kale-filled claw.

Pushy little fuzzball.

"Yeah," she said again. "Okay."

The sloth certainly seemed to have a mind of his own about these things. Vincent smiled.

"Well, how about you give it a shot today, and if it seems like a good fit, you can start on Monday? I'll pay you for the shift of course, and employees eat free." He nodded to Sloth. "Including their 'service animals'."

That offer was bordering on too good to be true. Zinzi narrowed her eyes, wondering what Vincent stood to gain from it.

Sloth jabbed her again, then squeaked in her ear, and she threw her hands up.

"Alright, alright! We'll give it a shot!"

"Great!" Vincent clapped his hands. "Now, what'll it be? I won't have my employees working on an empty stomach!"

Zinzi sighed and looked over at the specials menu.

She really was hungry. "Let's try the discontented minestrone."

Vincent grinned. "Coming right up!"

Zinzi looked over her shoulder at Sloth.

"Pushy," she said. "You'd best not be getting me into trouble."

Sloth chewed contentedly on his kale.

"Food, glorious food," Kenzi sang as she walked in. "Hi Vincent!"

"Hey, hon!" Vincent greeted her with a smile. "What'll it be for you, today?"

"Hmmm, something wiiith pasta, maybe? Feeling like carbing up for plotting stuff." Kenzi grinned at him. "How was your weekend? Did you get girl'd?"

"How 'bout some angel hair?" Vincent suggested. "I could do a light olive oil based sauce, maybe some sundried tomatoes. . . . Delicate and spicy!" He smiled. "I did! And you know what? It was pretty fun!"

"Oooo, sounds good, 'specially the tomatoes," Kenzi said, smacking her lips. "Ha! Good! You and my friend Seifer were the only ones that I know who enjoyed it. Did you get pix?"

"Alas, I didn't have the time. It takes awhile to brush that much hair!"

Kenzi snickered, then spun on her stool, and said, "You should've seen me as a guy. Five inches taller! And stubble. How do you live with stubble? That crap is distracting."

"You learn to shave," Vincent advised. "Or grow it out." He gestured to his glorious sideburns. "Or do a little bit of both."

"You are rocking the Elvis thing," Kenzi decided, reaching for a straw from the dispenser. "I wonder if he's alive somewhere... hey, could I have another one of those Mexican chocolate milkshakes?"

"Sure thing, sweetie. And oh, I wish I could rock the full Elvis look!"

"Early Elvis, or late Elvis?" Kenzi asked, blowing the paper off her straw.

"Oh honey, please." Really now, Kenzi. "I could do with a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, though."

Kenzi snickered. "Oh, great, now I want that too. Guess I'll have to come back tomorrow and get that laters... I saw the most awful, awesome thing ever on the internet, ever. A hot dog in a Twinkie. It looked gross, but I still wanted to try it."

"Well . . . it would be an interesting flavor combo, certainly."

"All that sugary goodness and bacony-taste too," Kenzi enthused. "It's a very portable heart-attack with a side of tooth decay! Yuuuum." She considered. "What's your fave thing to make?"

"I couldn't possibly choose. It'd be like trying to choose your favorite child."

Well, no, it wasn't remotely like that.

"So maybe you have a favorite, but you never say, 'cause then the others will hate you, and besides, maybe tomorrow your favorite wrecks the car. Or causes a stroke," Kenzi said philosophically. "Think I want to try that Heart of Darkness gingerbread pear cake for dessert."

"An excellent choice. Coming right up!"
