Cafe Luke's, Saturday

Zinzi and Sloth had done pretty well with hiding out for the duration of the school board visit -- Sloth was not what you would call a normal animal companion, after all, and while she'd certainly done it before, Zinzi felt bad about cramming him into a plastic carry-all for the better part of a week -- but the all clear had been sounded, and she was back at work.

She didn't know where the kitchen staff had gotten the godawful uniforms, or why they felt the need to wear them, but honestly, as long as they didn't melt polyester in to the food, she was down with it.

Luke's was open, and Zinzi was pretty sure she didn't want to know what that last special was.

If the game was spilling out into the town, Annie for one was not going to keep to the preserve. Instead she was going to find a nice little spot against the side of the building where she could see people coming both ways and hear who might be coming around the corner.

All she had to do... was wait.

Zinzi noticed her as she was taking out a load of trash. ". . . Can I help you with something, honey?"

Annie turned towards her really quickly, but managed to stop herself before actually shooting with either gun she was holding.

"There's a paintball war going on," she said, and yes she was taking this way too seriously. "It's best if you stay inside where it's safe."

"Uh . . . Huh." Zinzi wondered what this child might be on. "A paintball war. Sounds . . ." Cute. ". . . exciting."

"It is what it is," she said seriously, still not having lowered the guns.

She stopped abruptly, peering around the corner... and watched an already-hit squirrel cross her path. Good, it was one less threat to deal with.

Sloth attempted to become one with Zinzi's shirt.

"You do realize paintball's a game, right?"

"It might have started out that way," Annie said, sounding just a little bitter.

Nothing bad had happened to her at all. She was just in character.

Zinzi was now thoroughly certain Annie was on something. "And what is it now?"

"Oh," she said, "you can't bring guns to a game and expect it not to turn into a battle."

Still had not lowered the guns, by the way.

"Uh huh. You realize I'm not playing, right?"

Annie raised an eyebrow. "That's the only reason you haven't been shot."

Zinzi sighed. "You wanna come in, get something to eat?"

"Maybe later," Annie said. Though she did appreciate that! "Right now, I have things to do."

"I'm totally gonna need to arm myself, aren't I." It wasn't quite a question.

Sloth squawked a protest. Zinzi shushed him.

"Supplies are at Caritas," Annie told her, still serious.

Of course, if Zinzi armed herself, she was totally a target as far as Annie was concerned, but details.

"Thanks, kid. Good luck, I guess."

"Thanks," she said. "I might need it."

Especially with a couple clerks from JGOB who were undoubtedly totally going to try to take Annie out of her hiding space in a minute.

". . . Right." Zinzi decided, she'd check in on Annie later, if she got the chance. She seemed a bit high-strung.
