The Arms Hotel Lobby, Friday

Mary had entrusted Gunther with one task: find balloons in the Fandom High school colors to decorate the lobby. He hadn't let her down, but he had filled the lobby with so many balloons that it was tough to get around. Mary ended up popping enough balloons to make a path from the door to the front desk, and another path leading to the elevators. With that accomplished, she took a seat at the front desk. Now she just had to work up the courage to look at the receipt for all those balloons.

"What is this place?" Peter muttered, taking off his sunglasses as they were doing him absolutely no good in figuring out where he was or how he could possibly get to the desk. "A fun fair? I'm not sure they're taking this seriously."

His two hulking bodyguards did not reply.

"Peter." That was Petra's voice, coming in from stage... behind. "You mean you weren't kidding about booking us one suite?"

She was followed by Suriyawong, who looked... surly... but if you asked Peter, that was kind of his general state of being as it was.

"It's the Presidential Suite," Peter replied. "It should house us all comfortably, and the economy being what it is, we can't squander money by getting everyone their own separate room. Anyway, you have your own bedroom, so... don't worry, your virtue is sacred."

He waved vaguely in her direction, then glanced around to find whoever was in charge.

"Yes, that would be us," Peter said, ignoring whatever glares might have been leveled their way. "Could you assure mrs. Delphiki that there is a separate bedroom for her?"

He used her married name on purpose; he really didn't want to give Petra the impression he was trying anything.

"So you'll have one bedroom, Suri and I will share the other, and my security detail can guard us from the living room couch," Peter said.

He looked back to Mary. "Thank you," he added. "Can we check in?"

"I hope for your sake he doesn't snore," Petra said to Suriyawong, though she had audibly mellowed.

Suriyawong shrugged. "I've lived through worse," he said.

Not that he looked any less surly.

"Yes, please." If Petra sounded a little frosty... it had little to do with Mary. "Are the balloons going to stay around?"

They reminded her a little of Bean.

Petra flashed her a smile that was sort of genuine. "Thank you," she said. "You have a lovely hotel."

That was the kind of inane thing you said, wasn't it?
