Devil's Nest [Friday evening]

It was a slightly subdued Eric who opened the Devil's Nest tonight.

In honor of the weekend, there were two new signs on the door:

YOUR CHILD IS GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL AND THAT MAKES YOU OLD.
HALF PRICE DRINKS IF YOU'RE HERE FOR THE CEREMONY

and

The DJ was playing the greatest hits of the 90s, and Eric was hiding in the back of the VIP section.

Look, I remembered to put this up early today! *proud*

Well, Scott survived a semester of teaching. Nobody contacted him. Nobody tried to kill him. And he wasn't spending every night in a drunken stupor to deal with all of his issues anymore. Really, all he had to do was make it through graduation tomorrow and it would be considered a completely successful semester.

And so he was going to celebrate with drinks. It was happy drinking, not depressive drinking! He had come so far.

Scott was in town for Bobby's graduation a day early. Since he had some time to kill ~~and I think I'm so damn hilarious~~, he took a tour around the town to see how things had changed since the last time he visited Bobby here. Also, to scope out potential strategic positions to use in case of trouble.

Look, that was just the kind of thing Scott did. Best to accept it.

Scott looked at the other guy at the bar.

Then to his glass. Nope, still mostly full. And it was his first drink. That might be changing soon.

"Excuse me," he said.

"Can I help..." Scott started to say before seeing who was talking to him.

"Oh. I swear, this happens every time I'm here."

"Well, as long as this isn't weird for one of us..." Scott said. Then he took a swig of his drink.

Bobby was here because... he still lived in Fandom, for a few months anyway. More specifically, he was at the Devil's Nest because Scott had called to let him know he was in town and checking out some of the local establishments.

Oooh, two Scotts. He loved when this happened.

"Trust me, once you start having kids from alternate futures or die a couple times, meeting yourself once in a while isn't too bad," Scott said.

"Hey, Bobby. You didn't warn me there was another me around again," Scott said.

Ben was not, as Tiny pointed out in no uncertain terms, old enough to drink. He contented himself with a fizzy soda and waited for his visitors to arrive.

And really, really wished he could drink here.

"I guess I still have another death to go, then," Scott said, shaking his head. And taking a smaller drink.

"I'm sorry, but I have to ask. Jean?"

"We're married," Scott said, holding his hand up to show the wedding band. "Semi-retired at the moment, too."

Semi-retired from what, Scott wasn't saying. SECRET IDENTITY, YO.

"No, I did not," Bobby said, without an ounce of contrition. "Because it's funnier when at least one of you is surprised."

"So she's alive somewhere," Scott sighed with relief.

The 'and didn't kill you' went unsaid.

Bobby was drinking a non-alcoholic carbonated drink of his own and watching the Scott vs Scott conversation with some amusement.

"You look super-excited," he noted to Ben.

And once again she was back in this town. Vestara had to admit that at least it was better than some other places they'd been to lately. Possibly all of them.

She hadn't expected this sort of setting, though, and even as she headed towards the red hair at the bar she was keeping an eye out for her surroundings. "This can't be where you spend your time."

"You would think so," Scott said. "But one's all you're getting this time. I knew it was a possibility."

God, Scott. Such a semi-killjoy.

Bobby rolled his eyes. "Yeah, but this one's from a universe where things are all super-weird."

"You realize what you just said, right?" Scott asked. "How can it be weirder than my family tree?" What with two alternate reality children, a regular reality child sent to the future who came back older than Scott, that child's clone, his wife, the cosmic entity who impersonated his wife, and his ex-wife who was the clone of his current wife. Plus his space-pirate dad.

And his secret third brother who at this point was probably a guy who loved spikes, backwards baseball caps, and calling himself 'X-Treme' or maybe it was Gambit because why the hell not.

Dear God.

"She's been dead a couple times herself, but she hasn't let that keep her down yet," Scott said. "But I've been where you are. Just remember, it gets easier. Take whatever time you need to move on, but once you're ready, do it. You don't want to miss out on life."

Said the guy who recently had a nanotech bomb in his body.

"I'm dating Rogue in that universe." Never you mind how he was actually dating a girl who bore a suspicious resemblance to her in this universe. "And I have hair that's like, almost blond. And I'm apparently still a student there. While he's a teacher."

That was plenty weirder than Scott's weird-ass family tree. From Bobby's somewhat self-centred perspective.

"That's not as helpful as you think it is," Scott pointed out after taking a minute to digest it.

After all, his Jean was alive and not killing him. That wasn't fair.
