The Magic Box, Monday

Surreal wasn't in the best of moods after class today, but she went in and opened up the Magic Box anyway.

If she was working on a few potions known to make males have 'issues,' well, she was just practicing what Tersa had taught her.

So, Cara was bored again, which was the only reason she found herself in the magic store again this afternoon. Only reason. Yup.

Of course it was.

Of course, Surreal recognized Cara's psychic scent the moment the girl crossed the threshold, and looked up with a quick grin. "Which is more subtle?" she asked, ingredients strewn around where she was sitting on the floor. "Putting something into a male's soap, or a cologne?"

Look, if we were going to discuss all the ways Cara failed at what most would consider normal human interaction, we'd be here all day.

"Are we assuming they actually bathe?" she asked, kneeling across from Surreal in one smooth motion. It was a legitimate question, given some of the D'Haran generals she'd met.

"Point," Surreal admitted, setting one of her experiments to the side with a sigh. "Besides, it would be hard to control the dosage or get it where it would be used only by the target."

"I don't want some kid getting covered in hives."

Cara curiously cocked her head to one side. "Any particular reason you want to cover a man in hives?" Not that she was going to overly judge if there wasn't. Sometimes you just needed to punch people or give them hives, it happened.

Surreal shrugged. "Just for the Hell of it?" she suggested. "I just like playing with the recipes my mother and Tersa taught me, different delivery systems, things like that."

Just, you know, generally poisons instead of hives.

"I have lots of spare time on my hands, and very little to do, so I might as well do this."

"I'm not much good with recipes. Any recipes." Cara admitted. She hadn't exactly had much aptitude for it even when she'd actually been in a position to learn. "I find other things to fill my time."

Like hanging around stores she had no interest purchasing things from. For example.

"Like hanging around the shop with me, sugar?" Surreal teased. "I'd rather be in salle, honestly, or that public bath, but someone has to tend the shop."

"And if I broke anything, Tara would make the sad-face at me and I can't stand making sweet witches cry."

Cara shrugged, not at all awkwardly. "Something like that," she said. "The other two are the most fun but there's a limit to how long you can spend in either of them." At least there was if you weren't trying to avoid dealing with things in a completely healthy manner.

"Oh there's nothing worse than sad witches." Surreal would totally understand her failure at sincerity if she'd ever met Shota. Who definitely didn't qualify as sweet in any case.

...in all fairness, Surreal probably would have stabbed Shota if she'd known her, so she would have forgiven Cara.

"Aye, but we're pitiful things!" Surreal, that was the most ineffective attempt at puppy eyes EVER. "The only way to mend a sad witch is with ale! Or food. Or, well, anything shiny."

Cara would have held Shota still while she stabbed, she was generous like that.

The puppy eyes generated a lot of sympathy from Cara. Barely- suppressed laughter was the same as sympathy, right? "Especially when the shiny thing is coin or weapons?"

Surreal thought about that one for about half a second. "If I flash my knives at someone, does that mean I get coin and weapons?"

Oh, hey, an actual laugh this time."I imagine most smart people would say yes."

Surreal blinked slowly, amused. "I don't think I've heard you laugh before," she responded. "It suits you more than I would have thought."

You think Surreal had just caught Cara with her hand in the till from the even more awkward and stiff way she shrugged and tried to cover. "Most people around here aren't as funny as they think."

Mord'Sith ideas of allowed emotions, they were the best. If by best you meant worst.

"Of course not," she answered, matter-of-factly. "They're still children."

Coming from a girl who was all of sixteen, if not younger.

Cara saw nothing wrong with Surreal making that statement.

Of course, the fact she'd stopped being a child in any sense other than the physical before she'd hit double digits might have had something to do with it. Might. "Many of them even have the luxury of being sheltered ones."

"They're...cute? Like duckings," Surreal mused, tilting her head. "Not much sense, lots of fluff."

"I don't begrudge them that, at all, but it makes it hard to understand them. Did you ever meet my roommate, Miley?"

"I had some classes with her, she was very..." Cara trailed off, trying to think of the right word. "Very."
