Cafe Luke's, Monday

It was officially summer -- well, school- and pool-schedule-wise, if not astronimically -- which meant that Vincent was out front at the grill again, cooking up a summer barbecue extravaganza.

It would get old again in a couple weeks. But then there'd be holidays, and he'd bust it back out again. What could he say? He loved a good excuse to grill.

He's glad you decided to come Monday.

Bruce smirked a little as he noticed the specials on the board. "Did somebody listen to a lot of Jimmy Buffet this weekend?" he asked as he took a seat at the counter.

"You say that like it's a bad thing," Vincent pointed out. "Don't think I've seen you in here before. I'm Vincent!"

"Not at all," Bruce replied. "I just assumed that someone was musically inspired. I'm Bruce and I'm relatively new to the island. Does the Crab-burger in paradise come with a side?"

"One side of your choice. I have an extremely well stocked freezer, and I love a challenge."

Bruce chuckled a little. "Well I'm not sure I can meet the challenge there," he replied before tilting his head in thought. "However back in my college days there was this little Korean restaurant that made kimchi out of radishes instead of cabbage."

"Kakdugi," Vincent said cheerfully. "I don't have any already fermented, but if you like it fresh, I can whip something up."

"I'm impressed," Bruce said raising his eyebrows a little. "I didn't expect someone running a restaurant in a small town like this would be familiar with it. Yes, the fresh version would be fine."

"Honey, when I say I can make anything, I mean it." Vincent smiled. "The last small town I lived in had some . . . exotic tastes. And really boring ones, too, but I forgive them."

My dad's friend's son once got in trouble for bringing a Jimmy Buffet album to his kindergarten's show and tell.

He didn't understand what was so wrong with "Why Don't We Get Lunch in School".

And yes, I've now earwormed myself six times over.
