The Perk, Saturday Afternoon

Sarah had left her delightfully air-conditioned apartment and braved the town because she'd run out of cool things to drink that weren't water. The Perk, at least, had iced coffee. And air conditioning. Besides, staying at home would potentially have meant dealing with the SPA bothering her about sending in the report on her last class so her bout of community service could be marked as over and done with.

You'd think she would have been jumping for joy over that, right? Well, you were wrong. And it was none of your bloody business in the first place, either.

There was a grumpy superhero at the Perk today. But at least she wasn't suffering from the weather conditions right now.

"You're American," Sarah drawled in surly greeting. "Shouldn't you be just fine with this?"

She came from somewhere where it just rained a lot, and America always looked so sunny on telly.

"No one's used to this," he replied, taking a seat across from her. Because it was hot out. Deal with his reasoning.

Sarah's iced coffee seemed to have more ice than coffee in it as she swirled it around in the cup. "Well, it is definitely a fucking pain in the arse. Who'd want to live in a place that gets like this without being forced to?"

Ohh she'd been asking herself that a lot lately.

"Who'd wanna live somewhere it rains all the time?"

"People who don't like dying of heat stroke?"

For starters. And not Heat Stroke the super villain, either.

"Move to Seattle." Depression capitol of the U.S.!

"Isn't that almost as far away as moving back to England?" Sarah wondered. "Doesn't seem worth the trouble."

"That mean you're sticking around in the heat?"

"My community service is one report away from being over."

That was a nice non-answer. She liked that.

"Is it?" Damn her non-answers.

Oh and she had more of those.

"Mmhmm. Bastards keep bugging me about it."

She was insidious.

"Draggin' your heels, huh?"

"Just don't like writing reports," she replied airily, with a sip of coffee. Or ice. "What is there to say about kids pretending to learn stuff?"

"It's a polite fiction that makes everyone feel better about themselves," Guy replied with a grin. "Could say anything, probably."

"Mmmh." Enthusiastic, right? "I'm sure I'll get around to bullshitting my way through it eventually. Not like I want to be stuck here forever or anything."

"That so." It was like a game of emotionally constipated chicken.

"It's hot enough to make Satan himself feel like having an icy bath," Sarah remarked, "and it's not like I have a whole lot going for me on this stupid fucking island."

Which totally explained how she hadn't packed her bags yet.

"Good coffee," he suggested. "And squirrels that tell everyone your business."

"London has the Fortress," she retorted. "And since New Power Express pays absolutely zero attention to me, no one cares about my business."

"Yeah, but if I had to go all the way to London for a drink, it'd end badly."

Mostly for all potentially embarrassing stories he might get to hear.

Those would largely be about Alex, to be honest. Sometimes it felt like every embarrassing story in London was about Alex.

"And pray tell, Guy," Sarah drawled, "why would you go all the way to London for a drink?"

"Well, its that or Oa. And London is closer."

Sarah rolled her eyes. "You work at Caritas. You must be aware there is booze here as well."
