guilty as charged, tuesday afternoon

Last week, Sam had been in the company of a snake. This week, he was in the company of a ghost. But, this wasn't a ghost that disturbed his sleep. This was Brooke, one of the few ghosts he liked having around. Currently, she was sitting beside him, behind the counter, watching him do some boring paperwork.

"This is boring."

"I know," Sam said, glancing over at her. "Gotta do it though. My job."

"Get a new job," Brooke joked, smirking. "Oooh, join the circus with your zombie raising self!"

Sam raised an eyebrow at her and shook his head. "No."

For a second, Brooke was quiet and then asked, "What are you going to do once the summer's up?"

And then it was Sam's turn to be quiet. He didn't wanna think about that too much right now. Or at all. So instead, he avoided the question.

"Maybe joining the circus isn't such a bad idea at all."

[Open store! For most (including radio squirrels), it's gonna look like Sam was talking to the air. Brooke's visible if you're near Sam, though.]

Natalie's player had totally meant to ping in way earlier but zombies happened was really just wandering around town, but somehow she'd ended up with a Squishy for herself and a vegetarian sandwich for Sam, so dropping by was in order.

She gave Sam a wave and a little smile as she came in, not seeing Brooke yet. "Hey. Got your lunch."

Brooke looked up at the voice a second before Sam did. He smiled, not thinking anything of Brooke being there since Natalie had seen her before, at least. Of course, it wasn't a great first meeting but alas.

"This is becoming a habit," he said, smiling as well. "A good one for me."

"Just don't count on it, it's not going to become weekly," Natalie replied, as she came closer. And then stopped, despite herself, when Brooke actually came into view. "Oh. Didn't realize you had company."

"Heya," Brooke said, waving at Natalie. "Don't suppose there's anything in there for me?"

Because she could totally eat, of course.

Sam glanced over at Brooke and shrugged. "You remember Brooke, don't you? She's just hanging out."

"Yeah, I remember her," Natalie said, because it was hard to forget a ghost. She started moving again, towards the counter. "Hi. And you don't eat, so no."

"Ugh, don't remind me," Brooke said, frowning. "I'd eat one of Sam's leafy sandwiches at this point. I miss food."

"How's it going?" Sam asked, slanting a glance over at Brooke at the vegetarian remark. "Thanks for bringing me lunch."

"It's going normal," Natalie shrugged as she reached the counter and held the paper bag out to him. "Had classes, now have free time. The usual."

Sam took the paper bag, reaching into it for the sandwich. While he was busy doing that, Brooke asked, "What class? Anything interesting today?"

See, she was friendly. Friendlier than Brid, at least.

"Creative writing," Natalie said, although technically she wasn't sure if that had actually happened. And hey, she could be civil too. "And another on the seven deadly sins."

"Cool," Brooke said, glancing over at Sam's sandwich and sighing. "This is depressing me. I think I should go."

And Sam gave her a smile before she disappeared.

"Hey," Sam said once he'd taken a bite of the sandwich. "Sorry about that. She's a little lonely sometimes."

"Nothing to be sorry for," Natalie shrugged, leaning against the counter. "At least she has some manners."

Yeah, everyone Sam knew was forever getting compared to Brid.

"Yeah, be glad that Ashley wasn't here," Sam laughed. "She's a good person but blunt. Very blunt. Actually..."

Sam stopped and tilted his head. "You two would probably get along really well. Two peas in a pod."

"I'm not sure it works like that." Blunt people coud still manage to annoy each other. "Is she blonde?"

That could totally be a key.

"She's a ghost," Sam said, sounding amused. "What's her hair color have to do with it?"

"Just wondering if blonde blunt people have a better chance at getting a long," she said, by way of explanation that didn't explain much. "You never know with these things."

"You should make that a science experiment of yours," Sam told her, still sounding amused. "I'm sure a lot of people would sign up to figure out if hair color has anything to do with bluntness and getting along. Make some money."

"Who exactly would make money off of that?" Natalie had to wonder. "It doesn't seem that profitable to anyone."

[necroslacker]

"I was kidding," Sam said, shaking his head. "Wasn't actually serious about that so I don't have an answer to that question."

[whenshewasnice]

"Wow, such poor preparation," Natalie drawled, amused. "Shouldn't make jokes you don't want to get follow up questions on."

"Smartass," Sam said, taking another few bites of his sandwich. "Beautiful smartass but smartass nonetheless."

"I'll take it," Natalie decided. "I've been called worse."

Mostly behind her back, but still.

Shaking his head, Sam finished up his sandwich and dusted his hands off. "Thanks for the food, Nat. I needed it. Wanna help me put together a skateboard?"
