"...What about current boyfriends?" Toby asked, plopping himself down at the bar. "Do they rate a discount too?"

"You drink free!" Kenzi leaned over to give him a smacking kiss. "I missed you! Dude! We weren't dating in Evil World!"

"That whole thing was pretty messed up," Toby said with a frown. Looking back, he... really didn't like who he'd become in that other world.

"Sooooo messed up. No fun. No music. No good food. No booze. No smoochies!" An there's another one to make up for last week, Toby. "I didn't even see you then. What do you want to drink?"

"Yeah, I..." had spent the entire week poking around in people's heads when asked. It troubled him that the other-him had done so so willingly, just to keep his own head above water. "I'll start with just a Coke, I think."

Kenzi poured him one, garnishing it with a cherry, then leaning on the bar. "I spray-painted the streets, talked to a squid, and helped blow shit up. And I nearly got caught at least twice, jeez." Not exactly smart, Kenzi.

"You talked to a squid." Yeah. That was the part he was going to focus on.

"Sunshine! I heard some rumor about her ages ago, thought it was worth a shot. I'm taking her some shrimp tomorrow. The giant squid-thing that climbed on the outside of the castle in the middle? She felt like helping." Kenzi beamed. "Man, I'm glad she likes shrimp and not people."

"Huh," Toby said thoughtfully. "Somehow I'm not surprised it was you who managed to get her to help out."

"For that, you get a free Jell-O shot," Kenzi decided, beaming and setting out a cherry one for him. "What did you get up to?"

"Uh," Toby scrubbed at the back of his neck with one hand. "Mostly? I think I was just trying to stay out of trouble. By, you know. Finding out if people were hiding stuff."

"And telling the Resistance?" No, wait. "But I didn't see you around there..." Kenzi winced. Um?

"Yeah, um. Not so much."

Yeah, that was dismay and regret around that Oh, Toby. "Dude..." What was she going to say here? She had no idea. "Why?" Okay, that was acceptable.

"I think, I think I was just trying to, you know. Survive," he explained. "When I first got here, I wasn't exactly leaving behind a good situation. With the way everything was so... twisted, in that other Fandom, I was just trying to keep myself from being, you know, magic-spelled or whatever."

Kenzi leaned forward, threading her fingers with his, thinking. "You were at a lot more risk than I was. 'Cause of your mind-reading stuff." Which didn't make it good, but did make it understandable. "And it would've sucked if you'd gotten thrown in Detention. I'm glad you weren't."

"Yeah. I never saw what went down in there first hand but," he bit his lip, staring down at their entwined fingers. "I just knew I didn't wanna end up there."

"I wish we'd at least been friends there. I could've helped," Kenzi said, face sober. "But if you had known me, well..." I was misbehaving a lot.

Toby just raised an eyebrow and barely suppressed a snicker. Because he was totally surprised at that admission, yes.

Kenzi grinned at him, leaning in to give him a kiss. "I had to hit Topher with a bat. Which is another good reason I'm glad I didn't run into you. That would be a reeeeally awkward apology."

Which Toby was only too happy to reciprocate, yes. "Yes, well. I'm fairly certain Topher's capable of doing things that would warrant a smack upside the head even in this universe," he commented dryly. He... seemed like a nice enough guy, Toby supposed. Just lacking in empathy, which was the sort of thing Toby (or at least, non wacky-alternate-universe Toby) kind of had in spades.

Mmm. Smoooochies. Yay!

"Well, he has. And he's gotten smacked for it. I'm kinda wondering how totally flattened he is right now, though," Kenzi admitted. "He's in Haiti with Peter. Paying him back for tying him to a chair. And maybe hiding, I'm guessing."

For duh.

The Olympics are still on: Women's rowing.
