guilty as charged, tuesday afternoon

It was probably Sam's last shift at the shop and he wasn't doing much. He was sitting behind the counter, feet propped up and magazine open on his lap. There wasn't much to do anyway since he'd gotten most of it done last week but he was still there in case anyone needed help.

Sam was there, if he was needed!

It was a slightly disgruntled-looking Toby who made his way into the shop, closing the door before the gremlins who'd been tailing him could make their way inside.

"Ugh, finally."

"Finally?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "That eager to see me, Toby?"

"Oh yes," Toby deadpanned. "My heart was all aflutter with the thought of getting to see you."

"What's the matter?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "Something going on outside? Did it start snowing cornflakes or something?"

"See, that wouldn't be so bad. But no. It's those creepy green gremlin things, they keep chasing me around and singing."

"...singing?" Sam asked, keeping his eyebrow up. "Singing what? They good singers, at least?"

"It's- I don't know, have you ever seen those movies with the killer sharks? The theme music from that. It's just... unsettling."

"Is that all they're doing?" Sam asked, glancing towards the door of the shop. "Just singing? Not attacking or anything?"

"Well, so far, yeah," Toby admitted.

"You want me to protect you, Toby?" Sam asked, smirking. "You're safe in the shop."

"I just might swoon from all the manliness, it's true."

Sam gave Toby a little bow before snickering. "What brings you into town today?"

"I had been planning on Chinese food. But then... gremlins. So mostly I'm just hiding out until they go away."

Except it looked more like they were circling ominously than going away. Great.

"Maybe they're attracted to you?" Sam suggested, trying to sound serious even if he was joking. "Love at first bite?"

"Attractive to gremlins," Toby snorted. "That's just what I need."

"Could be worse, Sam said, shrugging. "At least it's not cockroaches?"

~~Or lawn gnomes.~~ "True. And ew. And if that actually happens? Your fault. Just saying."

"I should make you buy something since you're here and all," Sam said, glancing around. "I could see you on a pink of shiny roller blades."

"I don't really feel like pink is my colour," Toby mused thoughtfully. "Try again, Sam."

"Yellow?" Sam asked, reaching down behind the counter and pulling out a pair of yellow roller blades. "What do you think?"

"Better," Toby admitted. "Got anything in green, though?" Yes, apparently he was actually going to make a purchase.

"Green?" Sam put his feet back on the floor and got to his feet. "Blades or skates? I got both."

"Blades." Toby informed him. "Skates are a little too 1980s for me."

"What size are you?" Sam asked, heading down one of the aisles and gesturing for Toby to follow him.

"Nine," he replied, following along obediently. "Or an eleven in girl's shoes, but I'm not wearing girl rollerblades. So that's kind of moot."

"You ever gone rollerblading before?" Sam asked, pushing a few boxes aside while he looked for Toby's size. "Not gonna fall on your rear, are you?"

"Don't worry, I won't make you catch me," Toby snickered. "I know your frail arms aren't up to it, anyway."

"Frail!" Sam repeated, making himself sound outraged. Or just amused. "Um, I am not frail. I have firsthand confirmation that I'm in damn good shape!"

"Yeah? Says who, exactly?" Toby scoffed.

"Natalie."

Who was totally an impartial source. Sam yanked a box out from the top shelf and brought it down.

"Gonna argue with her?"

"Who as we both know, is totally impartial when it comes to the subject of you." A beat. "But nah. I already drive her crazy enough, I don't need to add 'argumentative' to the list."

"You drive her crazy?" Sam asked, gesturing Toby back to the front of the store to give him more space to try on the blades. "I actually think she likes you, man."

"Well, maybe not me so much as..." he just shrugged. "My particular skillset." Flopping down on a bench, he pulled off his shoes and wriggled his feet into the blades. Standing up, he gave Sam a triumphant look. "See? Balance, I've got it."

"You do," Sam said, laughing a little and holding out a hand just in case Toby tried to take a tumble.

~~ALLITERATION AHOY!~~

"But don't worry about the whole power thing. I don't know if I ever told you about this one thing I can do and I actually did it to her when the island was all...weird the other week."

Toby made a face at the whole... weird-island mention. He hadn't exactly been a fan of the kind of person he'd ended up there. "Yeah? What'd you do?"

"I can...push people," he said, making a face. "Overpower their will and make them do what I want."

It just sounded bad even when he was trying to put it lightly.

"I hardly ever use it and haven't done it at all since I've been here," he added. "But I did it to her. Basically, took control of her for a second to get away."

"It doesn't really sound like a fun sort of thing to have, no," Toby agreed. "But it sounds like you were just doing what you had to to survive."

"She forgave me for it," Sam said and sighed. He shook off the feelings that whole week had given him and looked down. "How do those feel? Not too tight? Feet not cramped up like sardines?"

"My toes have adequate breathing room," he assured Sam. "It's all good."

"And what if I gave you a little push just for fun?" Sam asked, smirking.

"Don't you even," Toby said warningly, although there was no real heat in his voice.

"But, it'd be so much fun!" Sam said, making like he was about to give Toby a shove though not coming close to doing it.

"You say that now, but I'd totally make sure to take down like, twelve displays with me. And then you'd have to clean them up!" So threatening, Toby. Oh dear.

"Dude, this is like my last shift," Sam reminded him. "So, what if I don't clean them up? They gonna fire me? Too late, I've resigned already!"

"Oh, right," Toby smiled, but his face totally fell for just a moment there. "I'd almost forgotten."

"Don't worry, it sucks," Sam said, having noticed that expression. "It sucks a lot. Gotta go back to Seattle at some point, right?"
