Magic Box, Thursday, 8/16
So this was Tara's last shift in the Magic Box ever. She'd planned to spend it cleaning and reminiscing, but the Pine Sol-and-memories routine came to an abrupt halt when she read an email she'd gotten from housing at UC-Sunnydale that said the dorms' no-pets policy would not make an exception, even for what Tara assured them, with only a tiny bit of stretching the truth, was a totally mellow sweetheart of a cat.
"Sorry, Moxy," she told the cat, who had followed her to work. "Looks like I'm going to have to either find you a new home, rent a cheap apartment fast, or convince my roomie you're a really realistic stuffed animal."
Moxy, who'd been busily hunting a house fly, had no response.

"Hey," she said, as she came in. Because she was talkative like that.
no subject
Which was apropos of nothing, of course, but Tara would have said it to anyone who walked in the door today.
Moxy meandered over to Natalie and rubbed against her legs for hello.

Wow, that was scary to say.

"Not clinging to Fandom life as long as you can?" she asked. "Guess that makes sense."

She could actually guess what the issue may have been, yes. "New school not cat-friendly?"
no subject
She bit at a thumbnail. "Probably it's too late not to live in the dorms."
no subject
She glanced at Moxy again, then looked up. "So have you come up with a plan yet?"
no subject
Which was to say, she was coming up with a plan, but it was kind of a big favor to ask for.
no subject
... Wait.
She raised a mild eyebrow at Tara. Was she saying what Natalie thought she was saying?
no subject
"Do you want a pet cat?" she asked, then corrected herself. "This pet cat. Not, like ... go to Everything But the Monkey and get a whole new cat."
no subject
One more glance at the cat in question. "You think he'd be cool with that?"
no subject
(Moxy was a cat. All humans kind of looked alike to him, and he was reasonably fine with anyone who gave him food.)
no subject
"How about it, Mox? Would you like to live with me?"
She was pretty sure the look Moxy was giving her said about what Tara's narrative had just pointed out about cats and humans.
no subject
It might have been an answer. It might have just been that he liked scritches.
"And you're cool with it?" Tara asked again. "I don't want you to feel like you have to take him, or anything."

Like there was anything else she could have meant.
no subject
Because clearly Natalie wouldn't have realized that? Tara felt a little embarrassed as soon as she spoke.
no subject
Because Fandom was where she expected herself to stay for the next year.

"Mm. Exactly why I didn't do it when I moved here in the first place. But Sam's more worth it."
no subject
It wasn't often Natalie dropped personal information without prodding. Tara was curious.
no subject
"Just a guy," she said, idly. Mostly to Moxy who was still enjoying scritches. "He didn't seem too heartbroken when I called it all off."
no subject
The cat's. Not the guy's.

Natalie nodded. "Okay. Doubt I'm going anywhere for too long. And if I'm not there, you can probably leave them with Sam."
