Devil's Nest, Monday, 8/27

Jack got to work on time this week and immediately threw himself into finishing the paperwork for Jaina's employment. It wasn't much; he just liked having things squared away early.

Once that was done, he'd be on the phone arguing with the fruit vendors. Some of the crates had been sealed improperly, and as a result a significant potion of the week's limes had been ruined by what bore the signs and scent of a gremlin food fight. The grocers insisted the fruit had been fine when it was delivered, and anyhow the club's insurance on food shipments did not cover acts of God or gremlins.

Jack was inclined to disagree.

He is kind of enjoying the argument, actually. Or at least he looks satisfied with himself.

"One of the students knows me." Derek. Learn to just say 'hello'. Or at least get a collar with a little bell on it.

"Hello to you too," Jack - who could smell Derek anyhow, no matter how hard he tried to lurk -- said. "I'm glad to hear you're making friends."

That didn't negate the need for a bell. Maybe on a pretty, pink collar.

Derek frowned further, taking a seat. "I've never seen him before."

Possibly. It wasn't like he thought back fondly on his time spent in Beacon Hills.

"Again, I'm glad -"

Jack finally glanced up from his spreadsheet.

"Oh, you mean he knew you already and you don't know him?"

His tone was not especially surprised.

"He thought I was stalking him." Which, you know. He might have. But it was just rude to assume right off the bat.

So rude.

"Bastard. Why ever did he think something like that?"

The sarcasm was not exactly hidden.

SO RUDE, JACK.

Derek gave him a look for that. Because, c'mon. Wolf-bros before... random teenage boys who Derek will stalk in the future.

The puppy eyes had their effect. Jack sighed and said, more nicely, "I'm sorry. What happened, exactly?"

He was opening his heart to you, Jack! And by 'opening his heart' we mean 'glaring at the table and telling the bare minimum'.

"I got kicked out of the picnic."

He barely even threatened the kid!

Jack blinked, wished he'd kept a closer eye on Derek during the event. "Because the kid said you were stalking him? That's unfair."

I know, right? Stiles was legit the worst.

The silence implied that no one appreciated a good lurking. Or a twenty something guy grabbing some teenager by the shirt to demand answers in a public place.

"Is this common?"

Stiles is in fact the anti-Batman.

Jack ... could not read the silence. He vowed to listen to radio to fill himself in. He was guessing, however, there'd been no bloodshed, not if the incident had stopped at Derek being kicked out.

It was funny, the things one reassured oneself with.

"I've never heard of anyone else being kicked out," he said, then -- more seriously -- "But someone knowing you that you don't know happens. More to Emma than to me. It has to do with the different dimensions."

"I don't like it." REALLY, DEREK? THE SULKING DIDN'T GIVE THAT AWAY. TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL.

"I've heard that," Jack nodded. (Usually it came up when Emma fumed after someone decided it was terribly funny to tell her she didn't wear many clothes in other universes.) "Not much you can do, though. Do you think he'll leave you alone?"

Well, he did threaten to kill him if the kid came near the bar. So... Stiles was totally going to show up any day now, just to spite him. Because Derek didn't realize how much telling him not to do something was forcing him to do it.

"Yes." They, sadly, did not have friendship bracelets in the works. "But he knows. About me."

Jack waited to see if there was going to be more. It didn't seem like thre was.

"And?"

"...that's generally a bad thing, Jack."

"In real life it could be," Jack admitted, and now he was sincere. "Here, it's ... neutral, really. So many people have something or other odd about them that most of us give up on keeping secrets soon enough."

Jack had never made any effort to hide his werewolf condition. He didn't bring it up with people out of the clear blue, he wasn't proud of it, but he wasn't bothered about anyone on the island knowing.

Off the island, of course, was different.

"Do you think he'll tell others at home?"

Secrets were important, Jack! Important! Oh em gee!

Derek shrugged one shoulder, glaring at the bar again. Because it was that bar's fault. Screw you, bar! "He's from my old home town," he finally said, like he'd rather yank a tooth out on his own rather than talk.

There was no such thing as too much paranoia when Beacon Hills was involved.

Derek had a hometown, then. He hadn't been hatched from some kind of werewolf egg.

"Not a place where people are tolerant," Jack surmised. "I take it."

Something like that, Jack. Something like that. "I can't think of any reason I would go back there."

"Family?" Jack guessed, that being the main thing he'd seen pulling people back. "Some kind of duty you had to take care of?"

He shrugged. "He could even be from a world so different that you never left at all."

Derek looked back down, that expression that signaled a Lifetime original style flash back on his face. There was a distinct lack of dub step in it too.

Then nodded in agreement.

Jack watched him for a moment, then went over to the bar. When he returned, he was holding two glasses of fancy raspberry soda. (Well, it wasn't like Derek would appreciate anything harder. And Jack liked raspberries.)

He set one in front of Derek. "Do you want to talk about them?"

What... talk about his severe trauma? WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THAT?

"Do we have to?" Best pack ever.

"I wasn't going to make you," Jack said, and paused before he was certain he had more to say. "I just thought, if the idea of home upsets you, you might want to tell somebody about it. That's all."

Derek gave him a very long look, weighing out the options of telling someone who was still essentially a stranger about his life and... brooding some more.

Possibly while working out to an extreme degree in the creepy old house he was living in.

"Beacon Hills," he said after a moment. "Is where my family was burned to death by hunters. I haven't been back there since then."

Because Jack needed to understand how dangerous people knowing was. Just be glad he couldn't show you the comatose husk of his uncle.

Please keep working out, Derek. Fandom needed your abs.

"My god." And immediately Jack revised his opinion of Derek a bit; the brooding was less comic if it had a genuine cause. "I'm so sorry. How long ago was it?"

"I was sixteen." So, about five years. Maybe six soon enough.

"What did you do?"

Sixteen wasn't so far away for either of them. Jack could feel how he would have reacted if Sebastien had burned when Evie did. He would have been wrecked, a walking ghost.

Derek almost jerked back as though he'd been punched. Because that was a loaded question when you had a certain frame of mind.

"My sister and I left as soon as we could," he said after a moment. "They weren't even all like us. Some of the kids had been born human. That is why you have to be careful."

Why had he -- oh. Jack realized his question could be taken two ways and muttered an apology.

"I will be," he said, and meant it. "Sorry. At home there's prejudice against the supernatural, but not like -- what you went through."

The police at least pretended to have a cause before killing David.

And everyone here was just so relaxed about not being human. It was unnerving.

Because his was a life of paranoia and running. Was awesome cardio.

"I'm keeping an eye on the kid."

Jack nodded in understanding. "Tell me about him and I'll do the same."

Because Stiles clearly needed two weres watching him, right?

SORRY, STILES. OH WAIT, NOT REALLY.

"Buzzed hair, twitchy..." He trailed off, unable to accurately describe a scent to go with it. Because of reasons.

Because Stiles was his own personal heroin? Oh wait, wrong canon.

"Tall or short?" Jack asked, and folded his arms. "And yes, I know everyone is taller than me, but you know what I mean."

Well, he was clumsy and had doe eyes...

SOMEONE KEEP ERIC AWAY FROM HIM. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

"My height." Ahahahaha.

Average-tall, then.

"Did he say his name?"

"Stiles. I warned him off of here."

Which will totally work.

And now it was Jack's turn not to answer in words. He made an abrupt snorting sound and looked distinctly skeptical.

He had met Fandom students.

Damn it, dumb teenagers!

"He knows I can smell it if he comes by," Derek replied defensively.

"You told him that?"

Because that wasn't at all unsettling.

"Yes." Derek's logic was not your logic, Jack. Or normal people logic. Or... logic at all.

"... all right."

Jack wasn't sure he could put the logical issues into words.

"I'll keep an eye out."

It's quiet here during the day, but Tiny is probably around somewhere if you need a drink.
