Cafe Luke's, Monday

Now, Priestly couldn't guarantee anything, but he was pretty sure that when he'd headed up to the loft to sleep last night, the restaurant wasn't full of acorn squash.

"Very funny, guys," he said when he discovered them all. "Let's all acorn squash the new guy."

When no one answered, he looked back at the kitchen and remembered that the kitchen staff didn't show up for another hour.

He doesn't even like squash that much.

Kenzi was blinking at the menu, then calling out, "Vincent! What is up with the squash thing?"

Priestly leaned out the kitchen flipping his towel over his shoulder. "Yeeeeah, Vincent isn't around any more." Man, he hoped the kid wasn't heart broken or something. That would be totally awkward. "As for the squash, you'll have to ask the great and powerful Fandom on that one."

That got a rapid-fire reaction of: Lip-wibble, then curiosity, then a smirk. "That dork! Dude gets me addicted to his Mexican mocha shakes and then disappears?" She pouted, and scrutinized him. "Who are you?"

"Priestly," he said. "Like Vincent with the only one name, only way more awesome hair. What'd he put in this Mexican mocha thing? I bet I could whip something up."

He gave her a challenge. How could he back down?

Kenzi brightened and flopped down at the counter, grinning. "Um, coffee, chocolate syrup, ice cream, and some kind of hot pepper? Caliente, oh right, chile powder! Just enough to give it an afterburn, you know?" She kicked the stool, and tilted her head. "I'm Kenzi. You got Vincent's e-mail or something, so I can send him a note?"

"Maybe?" Priestly shrugged. "I haven't finished sorting through all the paperwork he left. We talking mild zing, medium, fire breathing. . . ?"

"Kinda medium? So, he just left, and now you're just here?" Kenzi asked, intrigued. "Did you appear out of the woods, or what? Or were you hiding in the freezer to take over for him?" She fidgeted, and tilted her head. "I kinda love the hair, ya know."

"Yes, my entire purpose for being is running this cafe. I was born three weeks ago, springing forth fully formed like some sort of Greek muse." His sarcasm could get a little thick, sometimes. He started grabbing ingredients and the blender (man, he hoped this one wouldn't require that spaghettify function). "I'm from Santa Cruz. I used to go to school here, and I swung back through looking for a job. Next thing I know, dude is handing me the keys and telling me not to blow it up or something."

"Hey, I met a guy who claimed to be the son of Poseidon. He's a douche." Mostly in the way he almost drowned Kenzi standing up in a Common Room. She leaned forward, watching the proceedings with interest. "So, you know, it could happen. And I used to serve pitchers to Hercules before he split town... Santa Cruz? Why are you back here, dude?"

"Funny thing about Fandom -- you come from the land of 'normal', and it's kinda hard to go back." Priestly shrugged. "I was classmates with King Arthur. Well, he wasn't king yet, but, you know."

Kenzi frowned at that, wondering about it. "But how do you know your world is normal?" she checked. "Maybe nowhere is normal... Seriously? The King Arthur? Sword in the stone, round table, whole shebang?"

"I don't," Priestly said. "For, like, half the people in that school, my world is deeply weird. How about I go with 'primarily not-very-advanced-scientific'? 'Sans metas and magic'?" He grinned. "'Boring'? And yeah, he was heir to the throne of Camelot. Not sure if the sword thing ever happened, I haven't talked to him in pretty much forever."

"Boring. That was not the word I was imagining," Kenzi said, frowning in disappointment, and reaching for the straw dispenser. "I... how do you get boring out of being a prince?" She paused, thinking. "Wait, is this just Medieval Rich Dude version of preppy scum? 'Cause that's a letdown. And my world's supposed to be all normal, but I found out there's magic hiding from normal people last year. Like, everywhere."

"I meant my world. But, uh, yeah, rich dude preppy pretty much covers Arthur. With a side of way too freaking noble for his own good." Or at least, that's what everyone kept telling Priestly. "My world, I've got a maybe psychic hippie friend. If there's anything magic running about, they're keeping super well hidden."

"Ha! Okay. And... okay, not as disappointing there, although it sounds like someone I wouldn't want to hang with," Kenzi said thoughtfully.

Except maybe to steal some crown jewels or something. Ooo.

"They could be! Like. Hiding in dumpsters. Or Vegas. Or Area 51. Do you have one of those? Vegas or Area 51, whichever."

"Both. I'm pretty sure that Area 51 is just a side show to keep the public from looking too closely at all the foreign policy crap the government gets up to, though."

What? Priestly still loved him some good conspiracy theories.

"I made it all the way out to Hong Kong and Mongolia a little while back without running into anything, though. Unless they're all in Egypt or something, I think maybe my world is just a magic dud."

"See, now that I'd totally believe. Government types are capable of anything." Kenzi looked speculative, then interested. "Mongolia? Pleasure trip, or what?"

"Layover. Was going to do longer, but, uh. . . ." Priestly trailed off, then tilted his head at Kenzi. "Were you here last year? In the fall?"

"Yeah?" Kenzi tilted her head back, trying to remember what had been happening then. Her eyes widened a bit. "Oh, when everything started disappearing?"

"Yeah, after being nonexistent for . . . however the hell long it was . . . I kinda just wanted to go home. Hence the layover."

"Sheeesh. I'd guess." Kenzi gave him a sympathetic look. "You missed the cool parts with the luck dragon in the library. That blows, even without the ... yeah." She shook her head. "At least it got fixed?"

"Yeah, I missed most of it, I think," Priestly said. "A luck dragon, huh? That sounds pretty sweet."
