Sparkle was dressed up nicely today, if only because he hadn't managed to do his laundry since Friday's unfortunate food fight with Atton. There had been a mustard-smeared kitten to clean, and that had been an exercise in masochism and creative application of band-aids, right there. But, really, he couldn't care less about what people thought of him today. While the rest of the population of the island had visitors, Sparkle had... to work. Or, well, "work." He couldn't be bothered to do anything particularly strenuous today, no.

And so, Sparkle's shift at Demon Marcus was going to be spent standing in the doorway to the back room, wadding up hideous sweaters and seeing if he could chuck them into the burn barrel from there.

Look, you pass the weekend your way, and Sparkle will pass it in his.

Who will be completely happy to assist you with your dressing-up-pretty-for-your-folks needs.

Honest.

Isabelle liked shopping! She also liked snooping, occasionally, which might have also played into why she was here. But the shopping thing seemed more important.

Except some the clothes here were weird, like they were meant for oddly shaped Downworlders.

"What kind of clientele do you usually get here?"

"Usually? Filthy rich human types," Sparkle replied, giving the lady a once over, and then shrugging his shoulders. "But with this place, you know, there's really no saying who's gonna show up. I mean, my boss is bubblegum pink and has horns, so we sort of stock a variety?"

This was weirdly not a question that Sparkle had to address often. He ever-so-casually closed the door to the back room and then leaned back against it, shrugging again.

"Your boss is what?"

Well, guess Isabelle could really resolve to bandon her original theory that the store name had the word 'demon' in it just to draw in the more gothically inclined mundanes.

"... Pink?"

Really, Sparkle had seen weirder since coming here.

"And one of the teachers is like a talking pony, and there's a chick in the dorms who can't be any taller than like maybe seven centimetres or something like that. She rides around on a rat she trained herself."

And he was discussing all of this in a perfectly casual tone. Because, hey, this stuff was true. If he felt like stretching the truth, he'd probably be embellishing more.

Isabelle wasn't that surprised all these things existed. It was more about this other thing...

"And you can see all these people for what they are?"

Wow, no one really bothered with any glamours here, did they? Except for the skeleton.

"Sure, why not? What do they have to hide from, here?"

Sparkle was really not seeing your issue, lady.

Of course not; he was some random mundie living on some random island!

"Hmmh." Isabelle shrugged. "Maybe you have a point," she conceded. While she was wearing long sleeves, she hadn't bothered to cover up the rune that looked like an eye on the back of her hand, either. But then she rarely thought she had anything to be scared of. "This island just keeps getting weirder and weirder."

"You get used to it," Sparkle replied with a shrug. "Anyhow, you're just... here for a weekend, right? You're one of those people here visiting someone?"

Sparkle's bright side. It was weird, but some people could just walk away from the weirdness.

"Pretty sure I haven't seen you around before."

Well, he was technically right, because Isabelle had never been here before. But someone who'd looked like her had, just a few weeks ago. Poor Alec.

"I'm visiting my brother and our friend," she admitted idly, reaching out to feel the fabric of a near-by garment. "Alec Lightwood and Jace Wayland?"

And yes, she may have looked idle but she was keeping an eye on your reaction, Sparkle.

Sparkle's reaction was a bit of a grin, yeah.

"Alec, I know," he replied, giving her a once-over ~~because the Mun is dim~~. "Yeah, now that you mention it, he totally looked like you that weekend when all the boys had breasts. I did his hair."

For the record, her hair was very fun to play with.

Isabelle narrowed her eyes at him. "You didn't do anything unfortunate with it, did you?"

It might hurt her pride. Maybe. Probably not.

"Fancy French braid? Got him to put on something more flattering than those ratty sweaters he wears all the time, too," Sparkle confided. "Boy needs all the help he can get, when it comes to getting himself dressed."

Sparkle knew these things.

Isabelle looked amused. "That is very true." Aww, Sparkle, she liked you already! Of course, whether that was a good or a bad thing remained to be seen. "I wouldn't have expected him to associate with someone who works at a clothing store in the first place."

"Yeah, well, we didn't really meet here or anything. We've got ethics class together, you know?"

They'd met... mostly while Sparkle was throwing a fit, actually.

"I did not know that."

And not just because she hadn't even known Alec was taking ethics. Sure, he may have told her. That didn't mean she remembered.

"What's that like, then?"

"What, Ethics, or being in Ethics with Alec? Ethics is like sitting in a classroom listening to a guy who thinks he's intimidating in a dark cloak go on about stuff he figures are hard choices. And Alec is, like..."

Sparkle smirked a little, leaning back against the door and shaking his head.

"Never met a guy so afraid of hurting someone's feelings in my life."

"Yeah, Alec doesn't really like to do much hurting." Though as she said that, there was something sort of predatory about her tone that said she was of a slightly different mind when it came to hurting... things and feelings and people.

Jace might not have been family through blood, but in this respect, she was much closer to him than Alec. "It's a good observation."

"What can I say," Sparkle said, sounding casual even as he eyed her a little sidelong at that creeping sort of danger that seemed to crawl through her words. "I like to think I'm a half-decent judge of character."

And he didn't much like that, with a tone like that in her voice, he was backed up against a wall.

Oh, he needn't fret – Isabelle wasn't about to start hurting mundies all willy-nilly if they didn't give her reason to do it. But asserting herself as someone who could break him like a twig? That was totally something she could do.

Because she could, you know. Snap his scrawny mundane ass like a twig. Probably without even breaking a sweat.

"Really?" she asked, brightly. If with some remnants of that quiet menace. "Me too. It's a really useful skill in life, isn't it?"

"Keeps me out of trouble," Sparkle replied, eyebrow raised, keeping his chin up in spite of the hard-bred instinct to just cut and run. "Big fan of keeping out of trouble, right here."

Unless it was trouble of his own devising, but that was a different creature entirely.

Isabelle would've laughed so very hard if he ran away from her. And then tell Alec. And then get yelled at by Alec, most likely.

Isabelle nodded. "That's a good thing to be," she complimented. "Especially for someone who hangs around my brother."

"He's teaching me how to shoot, you know," Sparkle said, puffing himself up just a tiny bit. "With a bow and everything. Apparently I'm not a total lost cause."

Which would do him absolutely no good in the here and now, but hey, look, Sparkle was totally spending time with Alec, doing... like... stuff.

What was it with this place and the boys hanging out with mundies? Isabelle supposed it was out of some sort of necessity. Town wasn't exactly buzzing with Shadowhunters. But still.

"He didn't tell me that," she remarked lightly. "Is that all you're doing?"

What a loaded question.

Loaded, indeed. If it was possible for Sparkle to straighten his posture any more than it already was, he'd be attempting to scale the walls in order to do so.

"Just that," he intoned. "Sometimes we run into one another in the common rooms or whatever. Why? Should we be doing something more?"

They'd both come out to one another, in their own sort of subtle way, that day when Alec was teaching him to shoot. If Sparkle's prickliness on the subject now was him being defensive, or him being protective, that was anybody's best guess.

Whichever it was, Isabelle did not seem moved by it. It was probably for the best that she interpreted it as defensive, because taking it as being protective would have meant telling Sparkle to back the hell off because he had no idea who or what he was dealing with.

She shrugged, a light and graceful movement.

"Just as long as no one gets hurt."

And by that she meant Alec. She couldn't care less about Sparkle.

"Yeah, not planning on doing any hurting," Sparkle replied, his tone a little flat. "Pretty sure he's too smart to walk in front of a nocked arrow."

That was totally what they were talking about.

Yep.

Totally.

"Well, he's the most careful person I know." Of course, it wasn't hard to be that next to Isabelle and Jace. "But you never know."

So, yeah, she was watching you, Sparkle. Even if she lived all the way in New York.

"Never know," Sparkle replied, at least dimly aware that there was something not unlike a threat veiled in that statement. "I think he'll do just fine, here. He's a big boy, can take care of himself."

Okay, so, Sparkle was a year behind him and still called him 'kid.' Still.

"Mmhmm." Isabelle made sure that her smile was almost obnoxiously easy and light (and still with that air of a threat, because she was a pro), as she said, "Well, it's been really nice to have this chat with you... Sparkle, was it?"

He hadn't actually said, but yeah. She'd come in here knowing who he was.

"Sparkle. Yeah."

Somehow, Sparks wasn't hugely surprised that she knew who he was already. Alec must have said something, or... something. Whatever the case was, yeah, not surprised.

Not thrilled, either.

"You stop by any time."

If Sparkle ever saw her again, it would probably be too soon.

"Maybe I will."

But considering it wasn't going to be the shop that drew her in, he probably wasn't going to like it.

She smiled mock sweetly again before giving him a little wave, and turning to walk away. On her insanely high heels that kind of looked like they'd serve as moderately helpful weapons in a pinch.

Isabelle Lightwood liked to make an impression.

I'll be out for a few hours today for another one of those house concert thingers at my Dad's place, but I'll be back in the evening to grab pings, should there be any!
