"Well?" Priestly asked the cook. "What do you think?"

"I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be that color."

"Yeah, okay, besides that."

"It's lopsided," the dishwasher offered. "It looks like it's about to collapse on itself."

"Okay, besides that."

"Is it supposed to be burned on top?" asked the busboy.

"You guys are killing me here."

"Sorry," the cook said, not looking particularly sorry at all. "You're just never going to be a Pinterest star."

We haven't progressed to tablet menus, yet.

But really, it's only a matter of time.

Pinterest is both amazing and terrible for my confidence as a cook. On the one hand, roasting cauliflower is totally super easy! On the other hand, NOTHING I MAKE IS THAT PRETTY.

But it is tasty, and really, that's all that matters.

"Hey," an amused voice called out as the door swung open. "What's a guy got to do to get some service around here?" Jaime was actually looking to talk to Priestly, but he wouldn't say no to some food.

Jaime never said no to food.

"Not be an ass," Priestly responded before he saw who it was. "I should totally make that official policy." He came out of the kitchen, then grinned. "Jaime! Man! How's it hanging?"

Jaime laughed. "Apparently practicing my being-an-ass skills?" He grinned back. "What about you, man?"

He'd really meant to catch up earlier, but things had been busy...

"Dude, it is so much easier to randomly wake up with a bird claiming to be a part of your soul when you live on the island."

Though the girls back home totally would have gotten an enormous kick out of Priestly's spirit animal being a blue-footed booby.

"Tell me about it." Jaime shook his head. "I totally failed to keep things under wraps, and once my sister found out...?" Sigh.

Sisters.

"Never let you hear the end of it?" Priestly guessed. "Dude, my friends showed up for Parents' Weekend and were actually irritated that I hadn't turned into something else."

Jaime snorted, then quickly covered his mouth with his hand. "Oh. That's... horrible." Don't snicker. Don't snicker. Don't snicker.

Dang it!

"To be fair," Priestly said, "I did kinda make a big deal out of it all back home when they found out. And then skyped home as a girl just to weird them out."

"You mean you gave them evidence?" Jaime grinned. "I think I feel slightly less bad for you, now. It's, like, inviting your own doom or whatever."

"It kinda reached the point where pretending any more was just rude." Priestly shrugged. "Besides, it's hilarious the way their eyes bug out when you suddenly turn into a hot chick."

"Sure, but is it worth the non-stop ribbing from there on out?" The answer to that one was generally 'no' in Jaime's book.

"Eh," Priestly shrugged. "They'd just find something else to tease me about, anyway." If someone wanted to rib you, in Priestly's experience, it was going to happen no matter what. "It just means they like me."

"Well, there's that, I suppose..." Jaime shrugged.

"So, how is the island, anyway? I imagine it's pretty much the same as ever?" You know: confusing.

"Well, I haven't died in, like, months. So there's that." Hey, he almost managed to sound casual on that. Progress! "It's pretty much the same. I've been trying to convince one of the students that vegetables are awesome. So far I've won on squash." He tilted his head. "How about you? How's the outside world?"

"Well, that's something..." Jaime said, trying to smile like it was actually funny and not... pretty awful. So, yeah, outside world. That was a less fraught topic.

"Crazy busy. It turns out that college is almost nothing like it is on TV. I spend all my time in class, studying, or sleeping." Where were the drunken parties full of hot coeds?

"Yeah? I kinda . . . skipped that whole bit, I guess. You're not going to all night drunken orgies? Hollywood lied to us."

"I know," Jaime sighed. Very dramatically. "I feel so betrayed!"

"The worst part about being busy is..." Jaime trailed off and shook his head. "Never mind."

"That's not really how this whole conversation thing works," Priestly said. "You don't bring up a topic and then not talk about it. The worst part is what?"

Jaime snorted. "Guess I'm sort of out of practice?" He sighed again, this time with less drama and more feeling. "I think the worst part is being too busy to really think about things. You know... like... important things." Which was very specific.

"What, like the meaning of life?"

"No," Jaime snorted. "I mean, like... relationships and stuff."

"Ohhhhhhh." Priestly nodded. "Yeah, not being busy doesn't always help with that, either."
