Cafe Lukes, Post-Homecoming Dance

Karla and Warren had left the dance early, but still managed to be the first ones at the restaurant--no thanks to Warren, to be certain. She let them in with her key, showed him her office where she worked keeping Priestly's books (including a stack of receipts she was sure he'd be proud of) and then let them into the dining area proper, flicking on lights as they went.

"Priestly's promised to cook for us," she informed Warren, pushing a few of the tables together. "Has he cooked for you yet? He's amazing! They should be here any moment! And then he can show you his freezer!"

It was more impressive than it sounded, Warren. Really.

"So yeah, now I want to dig out my Prom Princess crown," Dinah was saying to Priestly as she walked in. "We need to have a royalty Halloween party, you know?" She cocked her head at Warren and Karla. "Rearranging everything already?"

Priestly was all set to crack a joke about royalties on Halloween, then went wide eyed instead. "What? No! No rearranging! This whole place is my mise!"

Calm down, honey. It'll all be okay.

"What's a mise?" Karla asked.

Seriously, Priestly, it was just a few tables. They'd put them all back.

"I just thought it would be comfier than trying to fit us all in a booth." With her kind of claustrophobic boyfriend and all.

"Mise en place!" And yes, his accent on that was totally terrible. "It's the only thing I really learned in culinary school. The chef's environment is sacred!"

In the kitchen, drama queen. You don't cook in the dining room.

"I could go and get my Homecoming Princess crown," Karla agreed, looking excited. "I have one for both freshman and sophomore year, so I have a spare if anyone needs."

"Which one would look better on Priestly? And maybe go with the blue dress?"

His... freezer?

Warren was putting forth his best effort at being enthusiastic about that, but there were just some things in life that he probably couldn't properly appreciate unless he saw them firsthand. That freezer was likely to be one of them.

He still looked a little baffled about that suggestion, even as people started to make their way in.

His freezer. Huh.

"Warren!" Priestly greeted. "Man, you have got to see my sick-ass new freezer!"

"Karla mentioned it," Warren said, offering Priestly a smile that said volumes about just how little he really knew about this particular freezer. "She seemed really enthusiastic about it, actually."

"Theeere you are," Dinah greeted him, beaming. "How's college life, college guy? How's being in Sunnydale?"

"I miss just being able to take off and fly whenever I want," Warren said, pretty much immediately. And then he looked properly sheepish, gave Dinah a smile, and held his arms open for a hug. "And actual classes in actual college are insane. But I guess you can probably sympathize, huh? How's New Gotham treating you?"

Karla waited until Warren and Priestly got back from their tour, smirking all the while.

"Told you so."

To be fair, Warren hadn't even said anything. To be even more fair, he was kind of an open book.

Yep. Warren was somewhere between baffled and completely gobsmacked.

"... How is that even a thing?"

Most impressive freezer ever.

Kennedy had been taking a long, meandering walk around the island on the way back to the hotel when she spotted familiar faces in the diner.

"Sure," she teased, leaning in the doorway, "sneak out of the dance before I can come say hi."

"Oh crap, you guys, she spotted us!" Priestly was on a roll, tonight. "Quick, pretend you've been turned into a plant!"

"And I'll even get distracted for a second and look away to help you with that," Kennedy replied easily. "I'm all about cooperation."

"It's food time!" Dinah sang out at Kennedy. "Look, we don't have to go to the dorms! We're all alleged adults who can stay up and eat in diners as late as we want!"

So, you know. No different than when they were students.

"Because we like to live dangerously," Kennedy added. "Also, good timing, since I'm pretty much starving."

Otherwise she'd have gone back to the hotel and made room service cry. (But with a generous tip!)

"You! You sent me a gift basket!"

A pretty intense one, for that matter. And Warren was hell-bent on finding one that could one-up it, too.

"And it was kind of awesome. But you know you totally didn't have to, right? I mean, no hard feelings or anything?"

"No hard feelings," Kennedy promised, holding both hands up. "Swear to god. It just seemed like a thing to do. I mean, I could, right?"

She paused.

"Also I felt kind of bad about throwing a demon through the front window of that store..."

"In our defense," Karla said, gesturing to herself and Warren. "We'd snuck out a long time before that. For...reasons."

Sexy reasons. Duh.

"Mmmmmm-hmmmmmmmmm." Kennedy waggled her eyebrows. "Good reasons, I'm pretty sure, otherwise I'd really be giving you a hard time."

After foods, very late....

"I think I saw some cookies in the pantry," Dinah said, getting up and clearing her dish. "I'll be back with those in a minute."

Dinner was good! Edible. Better than edible. She was pretty proud of herself on this front. Although Priestly probably deserved some credit for not letting her screw it up.

...now, where had she seen those Pepperidge Farm bags?

"Priestly! Did you move the cookies?"

"From where?" Priestly got up to follow. "They should be on the shelf." That was helpful. The whole place was full of shelves. He stepped up behind her, scanning the shelves. "Dammit, I bet the cook shifted stuff around again."

Karla was often blessed with Brilliant Ideas(tm). Granted, that these brilliant ideas were often better in hindsight was a fact she often overlooked, especially in the heat of the moment, when inspiration struck.

A moment like now.

Seeing Dinah and Priestly crammed together in a small space--that is, a small, lockable space--made Karla remember a favorite trope in those awesome romance novels she read. Sneaking up behind them, she waiting until their backs were turned and--BAM!

The door slammed shut behind them. They'd thank her when they'd finally accepted their true love!
