This had been another week spent grappling various house-related issues, not to mention trying to come to grips with the special nature of the island, but Mike made it to work for his first ever shift this week. Being the polite man that he was, he went to introduce himself to Tino, but the guy just sulked and muttered something about 'unfair arms', which may have had something to do with Mike's choice of black tank top for work attire. He didn't let that deter him, and just went over to the stage to greet the band.

"Hey, I'm Mike, the new bartender. Isn't it a bit early for you guys to be wearing costumes, or is the town just really big on Halloween?"

The zombies gave him a collective blank look.

"... You're not dressed up, are you?" Yeah, they weren't. "Oh-kay, I'll just be over here at the bar, then."

Max -- well, Max would have liked to be able to say that he was here to scope out whether the cute bartender bat for his team or Laurie's? But the truth was that he just pretty much wanted a drink.

"Hey," he said with a nod to Mike. "I'm Max. Beer me?"

"Can do, man," Mike replied with a nod of his own. There was only a brief moment of heisitation from not yet having memorized where everything was kept behind the bar, before a beer materialized in front of Max. "I'm Mike. Hey."

Max took a swig from his beer before doing a double-take back to the corner of the bar he'd barely noticed upon first walking in.

"Dude," he said, "are you aware there are zombies with instruments over there?"

Sometimes Laurie liked to switch up which bar she went to, okay? It was allowed. Both places served alcohol!

"Oh hi," she said, grinning as she sat down. Two cute bartenders two days in a row? Best week ever. "Holy arms. They're like as big around as my waist!"

Laurie had no filter. In case Mike had not noticed.

Laurie might have been just down the bar? But whatever. She was passing notes like they were in junior high.

And so a text came in on Max's phone just then. ~~Because I modded that Laurie had his number. YOU WILL TAKE MY MODDING AND LIKE IT.~~

MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Max emitted a somewhat scandalized noise upon reading that. His texted response, however, was totally eloquent. Really.

Dude! No fairsies!!!

Okay, only moderately eloquent.

i just don't get a gay vibe from him, Laurie admitted, sending her reply back rapid-fire. but I totes met one who might be yours on Weds!!!!!!!

The guy with the formfitting leather jacket? Max checked. He IS endearingly grouchy and has my exact preferred amount of stubble for that facial structure.

He paused to consider the merits of each of them, but in the end it was an easy choice.

OKAY. You can have this one, Keller. Only because I'm generous and Derek's super hot.

"I," Mike sighed, "am aware of it, yes." Still trying not to look there too much. "I might have offended them by assuming they were costumes, earlier."

Mike noticed, yes. But he was used to reactions like that (moreso than he was to the zombie band, for one thing). He let out a laugh. "Why thank you, ma'am. That's very kind."

"Wait, you mean they're not?" Cue another double-take. A triple-take? "Oh. Oh, yeah, now the smell's hitting me, that's gotta be legit." Max tsked, then turned back around to face Mike. "This town is weird."

"Yes, yes it is." There would be no protests from Mike against that proclamation, although he chose to convery this through a wry kind of amusement. "You new to town, too?"

"Got here a couple weeks ago, yeah," Max confirmed. "So far it's meeting my expectations of having cheaper rent than Chicago, but I did not predict the zombies and little kid conventions."

Or the stairs, but he was going to leave that out since this might or might not devolve into a flirting scenario.

"You new too?"

"Been here about a week and a half," Mike nodded. "Gonna take a wild guess and say it'll take a little longer than that to get used to all the weird. Hell, it might take longer than that to just accept it's happening."

"Yeah?" Seeing this as an opportunity to appear like a considerate person who listened, Max set his chin on his hand. "Weirder than just all the pie-flinging toddlers from last weekend and undead Americans over there, you mean?"

SO hot. and did not like me!!!! he was anti-laurie. hater.

It had maybe hurt her poor little feelings a teeny bit.

"That's what I shoot for. Kind." Lies. Laurie leaned on the bar a little, smiling at him. "Are you new here? Or like, bartender of old who I haven't met yet?"

She'd only been here a week. Totally possible it was either.

Well THAT is ridiculous, Max declared. Clearly his taste is flawed. Just one hookup, and then I am so over him.
