Devil's Nest, Monday, 11/12

Jack was not in the best of moods when he got to the bar today. Portalocity had hired a fresh fleet of morons, and they were saying all connections in and out of Emma's New York were booked solid through the end of the year.

Jack was certain the lack of portals to book was a computer glitch that would get straightened out eventually, but for the moment it put a damper in his Thanksgiving plans.

The DJ -- who could never leave well enough alone -- was apparently in an early holiday spirit; "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" kept creeping into the mix of songs as Jack sorted through a pile of invoices. He supposed being angry at the DJ made for a break from being angry at Portalocity.

"He's been told," Jack said, nodding darkly toward the DJ booth. "Apparently it gives the bar a sense of whimsy."

Because that was what the place needed. Whimsy.

Derek was just going to stare at the DJ as though the force of his judgmental rage would cause him to stop.

"I agree. It just makes me really hate elves," Jack said, and turned to glare as well. Because two werewolf glares would clearly be far more intimidating than a single one.

April just came in for a soda -- apparently all her apartment had was beer, and even though it was (barely) after noon, she did have her limits -- but was promptly horrified by the music and reevaluated her priorities.

"What the hell, it's all cheerful in here."

"Apparently the DJ is in a whimsical mood," Jack said, rolling his eyes. "Do you think anyone would mind if I resorted to threats?"

But then if the DJ quit he'd have to find another one, and somehow this was an actual concern.

"Maybe," said April thoughtfully, though she failed to see how that was problematic. "Never stops me with Tino and the zombies. Want me to try?"

She sort of loved resorting to threats.

"You could if you wanted to," Jack said, as the DJ switched over to some Rihanna song that, while it made Jack's teeth hurt, was not actually about Christmas. "... though we might not have to right now. Hi, anyhow."

Just as well. April could threaten DJs anytime. Having a reason kind of made it less fun.

"Hey," she said, claiming a chair and sitting on it backward. "So you have an afternoon shift, huh?"

She couldn't decide if that was something to be envied or not.

"Not exactly," Jack said, wrinkling his nose. "The owner here is a vampire, so my official job is to help him with everything that needs to be done during the day. But we don't have a Monday bartender besides Tiny, so I hang out at the club since I'd be here anyhow."

"Dude, I should've picked the vampire bar to work at," April complained. "But that's cool. A full day of bar access. Not bad."

Jaina had been in the door for all of about four seconds before she came over and jerked a thumb towards the DJ. "Do you want him killed? I think ethics are on my side on this one."

"I do, but I don't feel like trying to hire another DJ," Jack said, with the slightest smile. "Maybe we could intimidate him into just leaving for the night."

"Too early in the day, and too early in the year," Jack agreed firmly, and waved a hand toward the DJ booth. "Go forth and threaten a DJ, Miss Solo."

She tossed off a salute, then headed up to the DJ booth for a moment. There was a little bit of gesturing, just to get her point across, and then Jaina returned looking pretty satisfied.

"That should stop him for at least the next week," she said.

"And in a week I should be able to get him to hold off for a few more days," Jack nodded. "Thank you. Could I get you a drink in gratitude, or does that not work for people who have jobs here?"
