Cafe Luke's, Monday

It was astonishing how exhausting doing nothing could be. After calling Dinah in a panic on Saturday, Priestly had spent the rest of the weekend hiding in his apartment, watching bad action movies online and eating chips without using his hands. By Sunday night, he felt both wired and useless, and a tiny bit bloated, and had gone to bed to hide under the covers in fear that he'd wake up Monday and still not be able to cook.

When his alarm went off Monday morning, he tried to shut it off with the power of his mind and a well-placed gesture -- and when it kept blaring, woke up with a start and a cheerful whoop and rushed downstairs, barely taking time to throw on some clean clothes.

"Clear the way!" he shouted to the cook. "This is my kitchen!"

Luke's was open, and full of the most complicated, involved foods Priestly could think of.

Why, yes, Karla would like some of...everything, please.

"Priiiiiiiiiestly!" she sang out, in a voice that did not suggest she was going to ask him for a favor, really. "Oh, Priiiiiiiestly! It's your very favoritest of booooooookkeepers and I--ohh! What's that? It smells delicious!"

Way to have a Navaan-like attention span, Karla.

"I know!" Priestly answered, ducking out through the kitchen door, wiping his hands on a towel. He was not going to hold her getting distracted by his awesome and triumphant return to cookery against her. "And the souffle is light and fluffy and everything!" He stood for a moment, inhaling with a doofy grin on his face. "Telekinesis is so not worth loosing my food mojo."

"Rapping isn't worth losing my psychic senses over, either," Karla said with an understanding nod. "I think I should sit down and try a bit of everything, though, before I'm willing to swear for certain that you have your mojo back."

Fortunately, for Priestly, Karla was willing to sit down and make that sacrifice. You're welcome, Priestly.

"I suppose a tasting session can be arranged," Priestly said, in mock put-upon tones. "I mean, just to be sure."

"Well, what else am I supposed to do?" Karla asked. "Dinah calls and says, 'Is Priestly's cooking back yet?' and I'm just supposed to say, 'Yeah, sure, probably?' I want to be able to have faith in my boss and his abilities in the kitchen. And that can only come from taste tests."

And on the off-chance that wouldn't work, she pouted up at him and added, "Besides. I'm hungry. You're not going to let me starve are you? Right before the books need to be balanced for November?"

Priestly had absolutely no idea whether the books really needed to be balanced or how to go about doing that if they did. "Crap," he said, dodging that threat entirely. "I totally forgot to call Dinah!"

Hell, he hadn't even done his hair. It was all faded blue and pulled back into a little mohawk ponytail. HE HAD PRIORITIES, PEOPLE.

"If you wait until after I'm done eating, we can call her together and I can assure you it's true and you haven't just snapped under the strain of not being able to cook," Karla offered, ever the humanitarian.

"You realize that if I really still wasn't able to cook right now, I would not have anything remotely resembling an actual souffle to offer as special?" Priestly shook his head. This was Karla. She quite possibly didn't realize that, no. "And that a tasting menu means you're not getting full servings of each dish. Just small samples."

Ooooor Karla just wanted to eat and that made a convenient excuse!

"Can they be medium samples?" Karla asked, giving him her best wide-eyed and adorable face. "I have to eat a lot."

Dinah tooooooold you to feed her Priestly! Remember?

"I'm not saying I won't feed you," Priestly said. "I'm just saying, give up on the excuse for it and just order everything anyway."

"But that is way less fun!" Karla protested. "Fine, can I get a half-order of everything, unless it's something really, really good? Because then I should probably get a whole order."

Beat.

"How many things are there in 'everything' anyway? That's kind of a dangerous thing to order here in Cafe Luke's."

"A hell of a lot. My theme for the day is sort of the hardest dishes I can think of, which runs the gamut from croissants to an entire rooster."

Yeah, she was still going to order everything. Besides, she could always take any extras back to Warren. Yes, that would be very nice of her.

"Sounds delicious! Fortunately, I've been out flying today, so I've built up an appetite."

"Were you doing the actual flying, or was it more making out with your boyfriend while he flew around?"

"A little of column A, a little of column B?" Karla said with a shrug. "But I did fly around a lot today."

...While making out with her boyfriend, yeah.

"Fair enough," Priestly said. "Okay. Start off with some souffle?"

"Sounds good," Karla said. "Are you going to assemble everything for me? Or are you going to have a chance to chat?"

Considering she had come in here with a purpose and all.

"Most of it's ready already," Priestly said. "I kinda marathoned this morning."

"Great!" Karla said. "So, you load up my plate or whatever, and when you come back, I can ask about maybe borrowing your kitchen."

Cooooookies.

Also, I totally want Baked Alaska.

I've never had Baked Alaska, but it sounds sooooooo goood.

I read about it ages ago; ice cream and rum and cake and meringue and there is nothing about that combination that doesn't sound awesome.

...aaand now I'm hungry again.
