The Perk [Friday afternoon]

Jane wasn't usually very impulsive. Usually, she thought through things and made the most responsible decision. And granted, what she had done in this case was a lot more responsible than what she'd wanted to do -- cry into Lizzie's pillow some more and then pack up her things to move to LA and demand an explanation of Bing -- but still. Jane Bennet didn't usually just take jobs in random cities where she'd only spent a week. And Jane Bennet gave lovely exit interviews and baked a cake for the office before she quit a job, rather than simply calling her current employer and giving them the Jane Bennet version of 'I found something better, shove it.'

But in spite of how not-herself she was acting today, Jane was...pretty pleased with herself. The store had looked like it had had a really good inventory to start with, and she could modify orders and maybe even showcase some of her own designs. The name might have to go -- 'Demon Marcus' was cute but...um, not very her.

Now, though, she was curled up at a table with her paperwork and a cup of tea, going over everything meticulously. She'd sent Lizzie a text to tell her she had news (since...well, hopefully Jono would be okay with her staying a little longer, since she wasn't sure she'd find an apartment right away) and was doing her very utmost not to look at her phone anymore. (The Twitter feed she'd been scrutinizing hadn't updated with anything useful, anyway. It never did.)

Lizzie headed towards the Perk with ... okay, to be honest, she was kind of dreading it.

But Lizzie was determined to be really happy about Jane's news, which was probably about how her job needed her to be home, like, yesterday. Unless maybe Bing had called? Which would be great, even though it would absolutely mean Jane hopping onto the next plane back to California.

Which was fine, and Lizzie would help her pack if Bing had called to explain the week of coma he'd been in and how his Twitter account got hacked. She would absolutely deal with her big sister going back home if it meant Jane would be happy.

She would just selfishly miss Jane. But she was going to keep that a thousand percent to herself.

Only a couple of more weeks until classes started up again for her, anyway, and she could see everyone then. It was just that being around Jane made her less homesick. Jane just felt like home, no matter where Jane happened to be.

She stopped long enough to grab a cup of coffee before finding her way to Jane's table. "Good news, or bad news?" she joked. "If it's more mom-freaking-out-news, then just don't call her back. Sometimes I leave my phone off the hook until it's safe to reconnect it."

"Mom can never be upset with you," Lizzie insisted. She set the cup on the table with one hand, and reached over to pat one of Jane's with the other. "You're too perfect. It falls to your younger sisters to fail to live up to your promise."

This was said with an easy smile. You couldn't resent Jane for being a hard act to follow. Jane was un-resent-able.

"If you really think it's going to be bad, I'll break the news," she offered. She was the more experienced one at being a disappointment, after all. She got a kick out of it. "Why, what happened?"

"You ... did?" Lizzie said, frowning as she tried to process ... wait, here? Jane had a job. A terrible job that paid her almost nothing. But.

She glanced over the paperwork, trying to make sense of it. Jane had just -- decided to stay? Here? Jane had never moved out of the house before. Okay, and before she came to Fandom, neither had Lizzie. What about her job back home, and what was Mom going to think, and --

And none of that was as important as Jane staying.

"You did?!" she repeated, only this time, it was nearly a squee. And it came with Lizzie reaching over the table to squeeze the breath out of her big sister.
