Improv Class, The Boards, Thursday Evening

"Good evening, class," Jono greeted, giving the people assembled for tonight's improv class a nod. "Today, we're going to be playing a game called In-A, With-A, While-A, which is, essentially, what happens when you take three ridiculous prompts and you piece them together to create a scenario. It's fairly straightforward make-believe from there."

He nodded down to a trio of top hats that he'd pulled from the props room. They were going to need them for Being Frank anyway, he figured he might as well use them here, too.

"One hat has your setting," he explained, pulling out a strip of paper. "In this particular case, in a hotel room. The next has whatever imaginary object is there with you - a tuba, now. And the last, playing hopscotch, is the activity that you're doing while you're there. It's up to you and your partner to figure out some way the three things can be turned into as coherent a scene as you can make it."

He kind of liked this one for as absolutely random as it could get.

"So, pair off, and go be ridiculous."

Arrive/Mingle

The usual tea, coffee, and pastries are sitting out, as well as what's left of the wine that Porthos brought to the rehearsal last night.

... The wine is tucked behind the tea and coffee, though, with a 'no minors, please' note stuck to it. Jono wasn't going to enforce that or anything, but as a teacher at the school, too, he figured he had better at least make the attempt.

In-A, With-A, While-A! Pull or RNG, or come up with your own a piece of paper from either hat, and act out the scenarios accordingly!

The In-A hat might give you places like:
- In the belly of a whale.
- Stranded on a desert island.
- At a very loud concert full of heavy metal accordion music.
- At the Zoo.

The With-A might give you objects like:
- A rhinocerous.
- A tutu.
- A bomb.
- A football team mascot costume.

And the While-A hat could give activities like:
- Trying to compose an opera.
- Running a marathon.
- Teaching a pet penguin how to fly.
- Tap-dancing.

Pick one of each or come up with your own and have at it!

This was always one of my favourites, back in high school drama class. It inevitably led things like to me trying to mime riding on the back of an ostrich while a Chinese food vendor tried to explain why I needed to buy chicken balls, in spite of the fact that we'd been wandering lost in the desert for months.
