Il Pollo [Saturday evening]

It was Victor's birthday, and while Olive's first inclination had been to throw him a totally awesome party -- well, her track record wasn't especially great, and there'd already been the dance yesterday, anyway, and half the town was speed-dating.

So she'd opted to go the fancy restaurant route instead, with a neatly-wrapped package under her arm and her super-tall Steve Maddens on her feet. (What? She hadn't gotten to wear them to the dance for fear of twisting an ankle. Dinner seemed way less standing-intensive.)

She waited until they were settled at a table before asking the all-important: "So how's it feel to be all legal now? I can't refer to you as jailbait anymore."

Well, she could, but that road made her head hurt.

Victor grinned across the table at Olive. She was probably taller than he was in those shoes, and she rocked them so hard it didn't even cross his mind as a thing that could matter.

"It feels really good," he said. "I mean, not being a kid anymore is weird, but not in a way I want to complain about. Got any wisdom from your ten entire weeks as an adult you want to share?"

"Shooting a hole through a ballot while smoking a cigarette might exercise most of your over-eighteen freedom," Olive said gravely, "but it's also really hard to do. Other than that, I haven't noticed a huge difference between seventeen and eighteen, though your mileage may vary."

"I'm a little excited about the part where it means I definitely won't end up in foster care," Victor said. "But besides that ... yeah, I don't expect huge changes in my life. I still have even more high school to go than you did."

He gave her a sly glance. "But now I want to try that shooting-smoking-ballot trifecta, too."

"That can be arranged," Olive decided. "Not that we couldn't have done that like last week considering how much underage everything happens here, but still. Hooray legality!"

"Thumbs up to legality," Victor agreed, reaching for his glass of water to offer an impromptu toast. "And yeah, being on the island kind of takes the shine off a lot of stuff. But I get a nice dinner with my girlfriend, so it's not like i have things to complain about."

Olive tapped her glass to his before reaching for that nicely-wrapped rectangular box (http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC755LL/A/refurbished-ipad-2-with-wi-fi-3g). "And there's presents," she added. "So there's extra not-complaining-ness."

Good vocabulary, Penderghast.

"You didn't need to get me anything," Victor said as he unwrapped the box -- and then promptly hugged the contents to his chest. "But I am never giving this back. Ever. I've wanted one of these for so long."

"It's not like, the brand-new one," Olive said apologetically, though she was beaming at his reaction. "But I figured you wouldn't mind tinkering with it yourself, anyway."

"Apple hates it when you tinker with these," Victor said, in a tone that suggested that was exactly why he was going to love souping this one up so much. "Seriously, you got all the girlfriend points in the word for this. Pretty much I'm at your service for the rest of the night."

"Careful now, it's your birthday," Olive said, slanting a smirk his way. "You don't want to be at my mercy entirely."

Though, really, there were probably worse circumstances to be in.

"I'm glad you like it, though. I read all the reviews," she added, fairly dorkily. "And the retina display is supposed to be awesome."

"And the interface is supposed to be incredibly responsive," Victor said. "It's rude to take it out of the box at dinner, right?"

Not that he really would.

"I wanna see it," Olive said, leaning over to peer at the box. "I didn't charge it or anything, though. My one stipulation, by the way? You have to let me play that game with the little creature that eats candy on ropes."

Because that thing was so cute. SO CUTE.

"Sure," Victor promised. "That one doesn't work on my phone, so I've never played it. You have to show me."

He pulled the iPad out of the box, fingers stroking gently along the cover and frame but carefully avoiding the glass. Preeeeeetty. He wondered briefly if he could charge it with a zap, decided that wasn't an experiment he needed to do in the middle of a restaurant.

"There are, like, DJing apps too," he said. "I want to try one of those."

"I think there's an app for everything," Olive mused. "I mean, I bet there's apps for generating insane food combinations for you to try."

"Definitely," Victor said, glancing over the menu. "But I was going to be incredibly boring tonight and get the lasagne. No Oreo crumbs or mango salsa on it or anything."

"You're losing your touch in your old age, Mancha," Olive tsked. "I should've baked you a cake with bacon in it or something."

[ugh sorry yesterday was madness]

"I'd eat that," Victor nodded. "Chocolate and bacon is practically a classic these days, Penderghast."
