"Okay," Priestly said. "Today's Thursday."

"It's Friday," said the cook.

Priestly narrowed his eyes at him. The cook blinked blithely back.

"I hate you," said Priestly.

"You spelled 'offal' wrong," said the cook.

Priestly didn't want to talk to you, anyway.

Don't ask him to sing and dance. That was yesterday's special.

Okay, April had been enjoying the week of nothing happening, but after a certain point, even slackers like herself had to decide that enough was enough. So she was getting out and about.

"Meat loaf with mayo and chives," she announced as she came up to the counter, arms crossed over her chest. There was a challenge for you, Priestly.

"You mean, like, baked into the meatloaf, or spread on top?"

April thought about it. "What do you think would be grosser?"

"Honestly, they're not un-complimentary flavors," Priestly mused. "Texture-wise, though, I'd go with baking them in. The meatloaf could go totally slimy."

"Hmm." April thought that over. "Then I take it back, I want something grosser," she decided. "What about... baking M&Ms in too? With, like, Nutella. And tomatoes."

Whoa now, April. Don't go crazy here.

"Along with the mayo and chives?" By the look on Priestly's face, they were totally getting into proper gross land, yes.

"Yep."

April was so proud of herself. Grossing people out was like a personal achievement for someone like her.

"Sounds good, right?"

"Sounds perfect," Priestly said with a grin. He twisted to shout back at the kitchen. "Hey, Cookie! Got a hot one for ya!"

And then he leaned out of the way of the spatula that came flying out of the kitchen at him.

Priestly got along so well with his staff.

"It looks like your chef's a little cantankerous today," April observed mildly.

Man, why didn't Tino ever throw utensils at her? She could totally dodge flung utensils.

Clearly she hadn't cultivated the right relationship with him.

"He's just a little grumpy because he missed nap time," Priestly said. "And because I'm making him do things like bake nutella and mayonnaise into a meatloaf."

"Oh, so I'm helping staff training," April concluded with a nod. "Awesome. My favorite." She paused. "You want me to ask for it flambé?"

"Nah, the busboy would probably just burn his eyebrows off. But thanks for offering."

"Anytime."

NPC businesspeople lived in fear of April. Truth.

"So... did he do anything to start this, or is it just for fun?"

"It's kind of just what we do. He messes with me, I mess with him. It's been going on since I worked here in high school and they'd put stuff in my hair and see how long it took me to notice."

April surveyed the top of his head. "A while?" she guessed.

"Only the first time," Priestly said easily. "And if it was, like, a spoon, the weight gave it away pretty much immediately."

"Well, they shouldn't've started with a spoon," she pointed out logically. "Should've gone with something more fun to discover, like fish or cheese or something."

"They're not really the most creative," Priestly said.

"Good thing you're offering them this opportunity to improve their imaginations," April pointed out. "Well. Me, mostly."

"Yeah, but if they take your suggestions, then they're not actually thinking creatively. They're just stealing them from you." Priestly leaned forward. "So by all means, keep suggesting terrible things to put in my hair."

"You sound like a first-grade teacher objecting to standardized testing," April observed, but it wasn't an insult. "What do you recommend instead?"

". . . Instead of putting gross stuff in my hair?"
