Fast Eddie's [Sunday afternoon]

Cade had managed to find a bowling shirt that managed to both match the heinous bowling shoes he still had from the dungeon trip and have enough black in it to go with the rest of his clothing.

Well, for given value of "go with."

He was currently at a bowling lane waiting for Jess to show up and looking very confused. Why were there so many balls around? Didn't they only need one?

[Cade's waiting on Jess, but come use your fugly bowling shoes if you choose!]

Jessica was not wearing a bowling shirt. She was wearing the green shoes, but no bowling shirt.

"You look like you're already lost," Jessica said as she walked up.

"You can," Jessica said. "But it's a better idea to pick one that a) your fingers fit in, and b) has enough weight that you can knock down more pins, but not so much that you can't roll it very well. If it matches your shirt, that's a hilarious bonus."

"Did you just jam your fingers into a ball right after I told you they have different size holes?" Jessica asked. "For the record, that ball is literally for little girls. So well done."

"Carefully," Jessica said. "If you start to put your fingers in and it feels like you might get stuck, just move on."

"That's the weight. Eighteen pounds," Jessica explained. "That's one of the heavier balls, so you might not have too much control when you roll it. It's a momentum issue."

Jessica glanced down for a moment, grabbed a 12 pound red ball, and didn't really worry about the fingers. Not only here her fingers thin enough for most balls, but she had spider-powers as backup.

"Yep. I'm good," Jessica said. Maybe a little smugly that it took her so little time to choose one. "So, are you ready to learn, or did you pick up everything you need from watching it on TV?"

"It's pretty simple," Jessica said as she put their names into the scoring system. "Approach the line. When you get right in front of it, roll the ball toward the pins. Try not to get it into either of the gutters. If you don't get everything on one try, you get another. You get a point for every pin you knock down, and if you knock all of them down, you get bonus points. Wanna show off what you can do, or do you want a demonstration now that I'm done with the names?"

Because it was her, the names were "CADE" and "JESS." She feared what Cade might put in there. Probably space curse words.

"You're so kind. But like I said, I am fairly bad at this," Jessica said.

She set up at the closer row of dots and made her approach. When she let the ball go, it moved with some good speed, but almost in a completely straight line toward the right. As it turned out, pulling her strength back enough to bowl more or less eliminated the finer points of control. She was rewarded with five pins.

"And that's how you do it, only hopefully better than that," she said while waiting for her ball to return.

"They're suggestions on where to start from," Jessica said as she retrieved her ball. "The big one in the middle is right down the middle of the lane. So if you can't curve the ball and need to line up on the left side like I do...."

Jessica lined up as she described and approached. Pretty much the same story as before. She knocked the three furthest on the left down. "And that's how you get 8 points. Do better than that."

"You can always choose another one," Jessica pointed out. She wasn't laughing. Really.

"I guess you'll have to use stronger threats next time," Jessica said.

Jessica lined up for her turn and... She got four. "And all of this stuff is automated, so you just have to watch the screen to know what the score is. Combining sports and science so they can show some silly cartoons to tell you how bad you are. It's pretty amazing." In several ways.

"It's fun," Jessica said. "If you're wearing shoes and a shirt like that, you can't take yourself too seriously."

"It usually does," Jessica said. "I think there's a bar somewhere on the opposite wall."

She made her approach and got a whole two more pins.
