The Devil's Nest | Thursday Evening

A quiet week meant that Buffy had to make her own fun at work today. This apparently meant trying to make a tiny castle out of shot glasses while trying to ignore the fact the DJ was spending the evening playing theme songs from 70's and 80's shows.

Order a drink, don't mess with Buffy's castle.

"Hey, Allie--" Kaidan started.

"Wait, you're not Allie," he continued.

"...it's not Friday either, isn't it," he finished.

Couple of weeks without a mission were starting to do something to his brain.

"Afraid not," Buffy said. "It's Thursday and I'm Buffy."

"Yeah, this is awkward." VERY OBSERVANT, ALENKO. "...Uh, hi. Can I get a beer, since I'm here anyway?"

No, seriously. Awkward.

"Sure thing." She didn't mind abandoning her foray into architecture to do her actual job. "It's not too awkward, just so you know. I rarely know what day it is before noon."

"I'm usually a whole lot better at dates," Kaidan admitted, sliding into a seat. "Just been a long couple of weeks, I guess. Finals."

And that other thing.

"Finals for...you?" Wait that didn't seem right, he was too old for that. Or he could be one of those people who were in college forever...

Here, have a beer while Buffy thought this out, Kaidan.

"No, the kids' finals," Kaidan hastened to elaborate, taking the beer. "It takes a lot of paperwork. And laser-proofing."

He should've probably also repulsion gel-proofed.

"Ah. And here I thought teachers enjoyed that sort of thing," she said. "I figured you wouldn't go into that line of work unless you enjoyed spreading misery."

"I'm here under orders," Kaidan said. "It's not really my day job." Or the day job he would have chosen, really.

"Is your real day job cooler than being a teacher?" she asked.

"I'm a Systems Alliance marine," Kaidan replied, like that would tell her anything. "My real day job... usually involves more explosions and less paperwork."

Though he did do the paperwork he got meticulously.

"...If you make a template first, anyway."

"Cooool." Even she rarely dealt with explosions. "Teaching really doesn't compare."

"Teaching's important," Kaidan said - more as a disclaimer than as something he really believed in. "But it does get a little-- boring."

He could've probably used a better word.

"I worked at a school not so long ago," she said. "Not as a teacher but it was fairly boring all the same."

"What'd you do?" Kaidan asked, taking a swig of his drink.

"Guidance counselor," Buffy replied. "Don't worry, I didn't suggest alcohol as a coping mechanism."

Though she probably should have considering Sunnydale.

"...Yeah, that was a good call," Kaidan said, blinking. "So I take it you... decided to give up on teaching. Counseling. That."

"Actually the town imploded so the position stopped existing," Buffy said casually. "Just when I was getting the hang of it too."

"...Huh," said Kaidan.

What did you say to that?

"Hope you managed to save most of your stuff."

That, apparently.

"Eh I needed a do-over anyway," she said with a shrug. "The living room furniture was starting to look outdated."

"Did everybody make it out alive?" Kaidan asked. (Because outdated furniture, he got.) "I mean... wow."

"Most of the town was evacuated first," Buffy said. "It was for the best. That town made Fandom look like Candyland."

Kaidan was having a hard time picturing that. "Like-- how?"

Multiple syllables were not his thing, apparently.

"Oh man there's not enough hours in the day to describe just how much Sunnydale sucked," Buffy said, shaking her head. "It was located over the mouth of Hell. Literally."

"That's... definitely a new one." And sadly, these days? Not one he could easily pass off as someone talking crazy. "Did it try to eat you? Or... ... what does a mouth of Hell do?"

Where a vampire might be.

There was a vampire there!

He was there wondering if a certain DJ needed to be eaten when Buffy wasn't on the clock, but he was there.
